DeafCoffeeChat
I had a faraway doctors appointment yesterday so I took two of my
children with me and after we stopped off in Salem, (65 miles from my)
home to see if we could mingle at the Deaf Coffee Chat group. Only
it seems this group started at around 8pm and here it was only
6pm, and kids were dissappointed. So I said we would hang
around a while to see if any Deaf people came early. In one far
corner I saw a man sitting, and he kept looking around and looking
very shy, but I also saw a sidekick clipped to his belt. Hmmmm? (I
am wondering how to approach? Is it rude to walk up and sign, "are
you Deaf?") While I am thinking I see another lady in opposite
corner reading a book all by herself, and for some reason I think
she is Deaf too. Hmmm what do I do? So I decide to practice
sign language with my kids right smack dab in the middle of the
coffee shop! We were having fun playing the, "I love you more"
It is a game I made up where I sign "I love You" and the other
person signs, "But I love you more" and each person has to
put their hands together one more time than the last person.
That got things going! Deaf People came over from both corners,
and joined the party! There were at least 8 there already! We
had to leave early but we had a great time!
