SEATTLE -- Actor James Doohan -- who played Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott on the 60's "Star Trek" television series, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Doohan's agent says the 84-year-old was diagnosed with Alzheimer's "within the last couple months."

Agent Steven Stevens told the The Associated Press that Doohan is in the beginning stages of the progressive neurological disorder.

In an interview with the Daily Record in Britain, Doohan's wife, Wende, said her husband still recognizes everyone, but has trouble finding the right words.

Doohan also has suffered for some time with Parkinson's disease, diabetes and fibrosis due to chemical exposure during World War II and the D-Day invasion in France.

Doohan lives in in Redmond, Wash., a suburb northeast of Seattle.

The actor will be honored at the "James Doohan Farewell Star Trek Convention and Tribute," which will be held at a hotel in Hollywood August 28-30.

Doohan is then scheduled to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Aug. 31.

The convention's Web site said Doohan's fellow surviving original cast members -- William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei and Walter Koenig -- are among those scheduled to attend.
