Speeding fine? Just switch the road sign

LONDON (Reuters) - British motorist John Hopwood concocted a novel scheme to avoid payment when he was given a speeding fine -- simply switch the road signs.

Hopwood, 44, had been snapped by a speed camera breaking the 30 miles per hour limit.

So he went to a 40 mph area, removed a red "40" warning sign, drove back to the 30 mph area, attached it to a lamp post and took a photo as "proof" that his offence of driving at 48 mph had not been so bad.

However, suspicion soon arose when other drivers started querying the sign.

"This was a stupid act, bound to fail," Judge Anthony Ensor at Manchester Crown Court was quoted by media as telling Hopwood, who admitted trying to pervert justice.

He was ordered Tuesday to serve an intermittent custodial sentence of 28 weeks which requires him to spend his weekends behind bars and told to pay 2,763 pounds in legal costs.

Hey why not? Switch the road sign if cops write you up for speeding and take the photo to the Judge and he`ll belive the cop is just trying to get promoted. And He`ll Dismiss your traffic ticket.

If it says this

Change It to this

Unfortunately, a lot of signs use special screws, bolts, and nuts. They're harder to take down.

Besides, isn't it unethical?

You complain that everything is fucked up cuz of us "Liberals"... yet, you talk about being bad. I guess you Republicans are the bad ones. ;)

Interesting story.

Just note that we do not get promoted on the number of tickets we write. I have written under 50 tickets in my entire career. I usually do warnings except for the times somebody does something extremely stupid in front of me (blows red lights, passing on double yellow, etc).

Yay Taylor is good police officer! Lol i have to admit this guy was pretty smart to think of doing that. but isn't it true even if he had been going 48 in a 45 he would have been speeding

That is correct...he technically would be speeding but what officer is going to write a ticket for doing 3 miles an hour over. Yeah, I've heard stories of cops writing tickets for that, but I have never known anyone in our agency to write anyone for doing a few over the speed limit. I probably would not even notice a somebody doing 3mph over. Generally when they hit 10mph over is when I take notice and consider stopping. There are plenty of other traffic infractions out there than a guy doing 3mph over. 13 mph over is a different story though and I don't blame the officer for stopping him.

Yeah, I notice that too. Of all the places I've been to around Dallas, they fine you for speeding at least 10 over the speed limit. That's why most people drive around 5 over the speed limit.

What a ridiclous thing to do. He got owned!

I was told that if I drive on a road thru White Lake in Michigan....if I was caught going only ONE mph above the speed limit and I get a ticket period. That sounds pretty strict.

No, I didn't. I didn't say I got a ticket. I said I was told about that, not what police told me.

I see, it's alright.

It seems rediciously if get ticket when one number is above than limit number.
