A friend told me about this. I thought I'd post it here cuz it seemed interesting.
Before you get started
Okay, heres how they can use other VRS providers on SorensonVP, but before doing anything below, your VP need to have a priority on ring (port 1720). If your VP is DMZ'd by the router, dont worry. You might want to put a block on port 21 coming from VP (192.168.0.125, WAN, port 21, deny) because that is where the updaters come in (FTP from ftp.sorensonvrs.com). I would not be surprised if Sorenson decided to update after those method is known to all of us.

Method #1, Service: SprintVRS
Open a Microsoft® Internet Explorer® browser and go to www.sprintvrs.com. Do the normal login, supply phone numbers and click on "Dial." Wait for until an agent connects with you. If the "Callto:" line appears, do nothing. Wait for about 10 seconds. Tell the agent you are a VP user. Another line will be sent: "Ready". Proceed to click on it. The system will ring your VP.

Method #2, Service: HOVRS.
Go to www.hovrs.com and click on "Change Setting", in the next page, click on magoon (dark red) icon and check your IP number to see if its correct. Then click OK, now put in phone number and Video Interpreter will call you when they are available.

Method #3, Service: HOVRS.
IF you have instant messenger (AIM, great for those people who have sidekick) send an IM to hovrsim, type "VP" then press enter, it will then ask you for IP address. You can find it on Sorenson VP by going to Setting -> Network -> Public IP, there you should write down what is in Public IP address box (even if its greyed out) or go to www.whatismyip.com from the computer under the same internet connection. Enter the IP address and press enter. It will then ask for phone number to call as well as its setting. After the robot memorize everything, you can do "VP <phonenumber> !" to avoid those set-up prompt again. This is great for people with sidekick because Video Interpreter can send information such as address, or order # to your pager via IM, IMO.

Method #4, Service: ALL
For those who know how to do router stuff (firewall setting part), block 389. It will block LDAP service meaning you cannot dial VP number, only IP. However because 389 is blocked, thats where they download blacklist of the other VRS services. You can call any vrs services like hamiltonvrs, ipvrs, attvrs, sprintvrs, hovrs, etc. The only problem to this is two thing, you lose the ability to call VP numbers, and the VP will reset unexpectly once in a while. I will not be surprised if they changed the port number of blacklist soon.

My comments to Sorenson: I am frankly very disappointed in your business ethics.

Interesting thanks :)

Geez, I wish they make things more Simple/Easier to use.

hmmm funny, i just got email from SorensonVRS stating there will be a update coming soon. uh-oh.

Dear Sorenson VP-100 videophone customer,

Within the next 48 hours, you will receive a software update notice on your
VP-100 videophone. When the software is installed, there will be two
commonly requested enhancements:

1. You will have a Missed Call List that will let you know when you
missed a call on your VP-100 while you were away.

2. You will have a "Silence internal ringer" option that can be accessed
in the General Settings.

Complete information about the new features can be found at
http://sorensonvrs.com/support/updates.php

The VP-100 will tell you when the software update is available. You do not
need to take any action until you are prompted by the VP-100.

After 48 hours, if you have not been prompted by the VP-100 to update the
software, please contact Sorenson VRS support:
* E-mail: vrssupport@sorenson.com
* TTY: 801.287.9436
* VP-100: 801.287.9403 (Use Videophone dialing method.)

Thank you for using Sorenson VRS and we look forward to better serving you.

Not anymore. According to FCC rulings which were released today. Sorenson will have to unblock other non-Sorenson VRS providers.

HOVRS will have to cease the "Brown Bag" rewards.

VRS providers will not call you back. You will need to call VRS, stay online and a terp agent will become available.

All of the above features will be effective March 1, 2005.

Swell, isn't it?

I am just curious how to we set on the router for open source of relay? Just want to try if that true work.

Port 389 has nothing to do with video. It only has to do with the directory listing to allow other people with the same device as your VP to contact you using your "phone number" you put on the VP.

It would help if you told us which brand of router you have so we can help you out.

Its D Link Router and its DI-604

Then you're all set, you don't need to have any special configuration for "open source" of relay. You have complete freedom of choice of relay providers on the D-Link DVC-1000 videophone.

I see the timing of the post and the update announcement to be quite fascinating!
