I take it all in stride. Only thing gets me is that if they want us all to stop using the N word and want the N word to recede from the language then they should also not be using it with each other either, particularly in media/comedy.When they use it with each other always then occasionaly it carries over into the caucasion slang. When we are exposed to offensive words over and over, then these words sit in the front of our brains when we are frustrated etc. And slip out too easily. Realize I don't think with this word much anymore

Well I'm proud to be vegan.

I have nothing against ethnic minorities forming their own groups although I do think sometimes people can be a little over the top when they accuse people of being racist. I get a lot of problems with the people from the asian community not excepting my guide dog. I used to shop at this charity shop called 'Islamic relief'. I even donated money to them. Then one day I went there and this Asian boy was really funny about my dog. When I wrote about it online this woman started sticking up for them and saying maybe I should go with a guide next time as if guides grow on trees or something. I've never been back since then.
 
Thats one thing I dont understand is why certain islamic and asian groups discriminate against a person for having a guidedog because dogs are considered 'dirty' to their culture, when they know good and well that often a guidedog is a godsend that allows that person to regain some of their independence. I dont think any of them will understand until the day comes they find themselves blind and doing simple tasks become marathons.

Interesting thread, even though I am damn white, actually American MUTT for pete sake!!!

Sometimes I get mad from blacks just because I was white and being in company's van, I was like whoa!!! WTF did we do? We just sit and wait for red light to turn green. That is what turned me off from North Carolina which I once live there, it is just too much


Well to be honest, we do have white days, George washington B-day Abe Lincoln B-day, Labor and memorial days, etc, they were created by whites. So... to be fair, I think we overdo with this. grin, I am still proud to be WHITE and smells like Balogna, and can't jump. I got nothing against any colors. I still don't understand why they got friction with us!
 
You silly white people. You think you've got a point here but in reality, you really don't.

I try hard to stay in the debate forum but this thread needs to be addressed.

Were the indians oppressed by the whites? Yes. (do a history search on native indians)

Were the blacks oppressed by the whites? Yes. (do a history search on slavery and africa)

Were the mexicans oppressed by the whites? Yes. (do a history search on mexico and texas)

(I'm sure I left others out, Irish anyone?)

Were the asians oppressed by the whites? Yes. (do a history search on WWI.. oh screw it. you people wouldn't know where to begin. I'll give you a link. click here )

So why do these people have their own holidays? Is it to oppress you whites? Or is it a social/cultural awareness thing? It's the latter. Even though it's about pride, it's not a pride to make one superior over the other. It's a pride that we've come a long way from harsh oppression to better understanding and equality among men and woman. It's a reminder that the minorities, yes we're tiny compared the the white americans, that we're here to stay and we're not going to let history repeat itself.

You white people want a race day? You need to fix your problem with the KKK. Because when we think of white pride... we think of the KKK. And when we think of the KKK, well... we all know what the KKK wants.

Fix that and you can have your white days. For now you can celebrate with us and eat our food and be merry. Hell we practically celebrate white day every day by eating at McDonalds.

PROUD OF BEING YOURSELF! That's my point. There's no need to say I am proud of Theravada Buddhism, I am proud of Bisexuality, I am proud of black hair, I am proud of living in mobile home, I am proud of being a Janitor, I am proud of etc etc etc etc etc. People don't need to know about that, they just need to know how proud you are as being yourself.

I've already pointed this out above in this post. The colleges names after white people far outnumbers 60 colleges above. Again refer to the history of America. It would be naive to think that everything we have today (2007) was comparable 50 years ago in terms of equality.

This email is ignorant of the history of america. This email puts to shame to anyone who advocates or forward this email. There are other ways to be proud, but doing it in this manner and disregarding the history of slavery and among other things is just downright stupid and ignorant.
 
You know, it's one thing to be proud of who you are. And by the sound of it, some of you ARE proud to be who you are, WHATEVER your ethnicity. I find it a little strange that some folks feel the need to be proud of being a member of the majority, and a member of a group that isn't (nor have they ever been) oppressed. In fact, in our nation's history (and in the history of several OTHER nations of the world), white people where the Oppressors, not the oppressed. But hey, if you want to take pride in the pigmentation of your skin, go for it.

Some of you, however, have taken this opportunity not to point out why you're proud of who YOU are, but rather, you've chosen to espouse why you DON'T like other ethnicities. Ladies and gentlemen, THAT is bigotry, and there are a great many of you that should be ashamed of yourselves.

I've seen a LOT of generalizations and stereotyping being bandied about in this thread, and I find that repulsive.

Do I think that reverse racism is any less offensive? No, I don't. I don't like being called a honky, cracker, etc... and thankfully, that has seldom happened to me. I HAVE heard a lot of white people call black people N****r in my lifetime, sadly. I HAVE heard Asians made fun of, Jews made fun of (and btw, whoever said something about jewish ethnicity coming strictly from their religious beliefs, that's incorrect; there is the jewish faith, and there is the jewish race, and it's possible to be persecuted for either). I've heard people of middle eastern descent be ridiculed and called terrorists, I've heard a LOT of anti-gay remarks in my life (surprise!). The thing to remember here, is that when those kinds of words are used, they are typically coming from a place of hatred, ignorance and fear.

White people used to refer to their slaves as N*****s. That word used to be (and actually, still is) scrawled in spraypaint on walls and homes by white supremecists. Members of the KKK use the word liberally when referring to African Americans, and to them, if you have black friends or loved ones, you're considered a N****r-lover. And yes, some black people use the word to refer to one another. ALL of it is despicable.

That original email was obviously written by a white supremecist, and the fact that a lot of you are cheering it on disgusts me. How any member of one oppressed minority group can contribute to the oppression of another minority group baffles me.

Yes, I know, not ALL of you are doing that. But enough of you are, and I find that very troubling.
 
How can a person be "proud" of their race, whatever it is? Race is not an accomplishment. Race is something over which you have no control or choice.

If anyone has to be "proud" of something, be proud of your personal accomplishments and character.

Well, for some people... it's possible to be proud of the fact that despite adversity and oppression, you still manage to hold your head high, and not let your detractors (ie, those that might call you racial slurs, etc.) get to you. I suppose there's also an element of taking pride in the accomplishments of those within your race/culture, who managed to overcome obstacles along the way, many times put there by those who would see you fail.

There are a lot of things out there over which you might not have control (your race, gender, sexual orientation, where you were born, where you went to high school, etc.) where it's possible (and appropriate) to take pride.

But I see where you're going, Reba... I agree that it's the individual ACTIONS that deserve praise (or condemnation). But members of the same minority group oftentimes draw stength from a shared struggle, and I think that's the concept in which many folks take pride.
