Some Abstinence Programs Mislead Teens, Report Says

Many American youngsters participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy," a congressional staff analysis has found.

Those and other assertions are examples of the "false, misleading, or distorted information" in the programs' teaching materials, said the analysis, released yesterday, which reviewed the curricula of more than a dozen projects aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.

In providing nearly $170 million next year to fund groups that teach abstinence only, the Bush administration, with backing from the Republican Congress, is investing heavily in a just-say-no strategy for teenagers and sex. But youngsters taking the courses frequently receive medically inaccurate or misleading information, often in direct contradiction to the findings of government scientists, said the report, by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), a critic of the administration who has long argued for comprehensive sex education.

Several million children ages 9 to 18 have participated in the more than 100 federal abstinence programs since the efforts began in 1999. Waxman's staff reviewed the 13 most commonly used curricula -- those used by at least five programs apiece.

The report concluded that two of the curricula were accurate but the 11 others, used by 69 organizations in 25 states, contain unproved claims, subjective conclusions or outright falsehoods regarding reproductive health, gender traits and when life begins. In some cases, Waxman said in an interview, the factual issues were limited to occasional misinterpretations of publicly available data; in others, the materials pervasively presented subjective opinions as scientific fact.

Among the misconceptions cited by Waxman's investigators:

• A 43-day-old fetus is a "thinking person."

• HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can be spread via sweat and tears.

• Condoms fail to prevent HIV transmission as often as 31 percent of the time in heterosexual intercourse.

One curriculum, called "Me, My World, My Future," teaches that women who have an abortion "are more prone to suicide" and that as many as 10 percent of them become sterile. This contradicts the 2001 edition of a standard obstetrics textbook that says fertility is not affected by elective abortion, the Waxman report said.

Ok... Religious Right clearly don't know what they were talking about. I wonder if they know that divorce/broke up or fired/layoff itself are more prone to suicide than abortion? I would say approx 30% or higher. I also wonder if they even aware that AIDS rate is higher in heterosexual than homosexual? Noooo. *gasp* They did not! [Note: I insert my dry humor/sarcasm in these comment] Seriously, with these moronic curriculums & programs, it got me think twice about sending my child(ren) to the school in America... We definitely will homeschooling my kids... Well, it is more likely that we will be in Sweden by that time anyway.

I feel sorry for our young generations, they have no choice but grow up in that kind of moronic programs/curriculums in the public schools. Be honest with you, abstinence education isn't about keeping people safe at all. It's about pushing Religious Right agenda. Oh btw, these curriculums/programs are now laughstock at one of communities where I mod at. At least they give them something to laugh at. That's good thing, right? Right?

In 1960's to 1970's, my grandparents were concerned about their next generation may have high risky with VD and Herps. Now, the society medical cure the VD and herps.

Right now the statistic indicates 48 million people who have AIDS on this planet. Twenty years later, 3/4 people will get AIDS if the medical would not able to cure them. We will be stuck for next our young generations. Yes, it is scary and worried about our future grand-children/ great-grandchildren.

Alot of churches are closure in Massachusetts. Some of schools are not allowing to debate or discuss about the religious. The society is changed so much at this time. I remember, I was in school. We went to the church on Wednesday after school. We were discussing about bible and involve alot of activities like entertainment and sports.

Nowadays, teenager use so much on the internet and involve wrong group. Many parents are working all the day. Did not have a time to be with their children. Cost of living is killing our society.

My grandmother and mom did not work because they spend more time with the children. Many mothers have to work. Daycare program is not great! churches and priests are not trustworthy. Scout Camping is not safety either.

How could we trust anyone nowadays to drop your children off at the place?

as for the HIV/AID where you come up with idea?? i like to know more about this cuz you state the statistic.. ( I reread Magatsu's link few times and is reading it again with my cup of coffee)

rest of your quote I have to agree..

as for the religious in school.. I would say the public school they don't have to use religious thing to be involved cause so many people go in school with their own religious... So if they want religious involves I would agree it should be either at charter school or private school.

My next door neighbor their daughter goes to private school.. I can't remmy the name of school but definetly out of cape cod..

hey everyone remmy the regilious thing is in my opinions!

I am not aware of the program at public schools to begin with, But, I am sure not going to let that happen if they are going to mislead children into something that aren't facts why would they need that program to began with?

I think the important role is to have us parent to be teaching children about the risky of AIDS, Abortions and etc. Because, we know; the truth we know the facts we wouldn't mislead our children.:)

What a joke! Don't they really know how it takes to conceive a child???

Appalling!!

While as a HIV/AIDS educator, I always stressed on abstinence but did not use religious facts to support that. Instead, I talk about how the kids need to wait until they are emotionally/physically mature before plunging into the unknown world of sex.

I used to tell the kids that abstinence is the only 100 percent sound-proof method of not getting pregnant, STDS, HIV, or Hep B/C. But if they decide to take a risk, they need to be educated first and be prepared with prevention tools of transmitted diseases or pregnancy.

I need to correct you on that one. There is no cure for Herpes or VD. There are drugs out there to prevent flareups/outbreaks.

Exactly....

To General readers,

I had a quite few talk with Kayla...

I remind her... when you get older.. PLEASE PLEASE do not try do behind my back but... If you ever think of doing some sex Please ask your mom or dad for some protections!

I don't want my children go thru what my Ma went thru... I didn't get pregnant during high school I wait till im 25 or older.. I had my first baby at 26 years old...

my two older sisters had their babies before they graduated! that teach me a lesson.. so I will keep on talking to my kids when they get older.. Once kayla get her Puberty change I will keep talking.. she also did shaved *some of her eyebrow* I discuss with her about puberty change in her body and mental as well too! so I told her she has to ask for some help on her looks Hehe.. so I gave her a radorless for her shaving legs since she shaved her eyebrow *eeekkkk*.. pretty soon she will be getting her hormones changing so I will keep on talking and talking.. I will not give up talking with each of my kids till they move out! *giggle*

While you are correct on that, most parents do not bother to educate their children. Some are too shy or embarrassed to discuss such frank stuff and others simply dont bother because they were never told by their own parents. Heck, my mom never bothered to tell me about birds and bees. I had to learn all about that from reading risque books like " Endless Love" or sneaking looks into her Joy of Sex manual in the closet.

Even if some parents do attempt to educate their kids, their opinions may be so far fetched or provide wrong facts.

So it is good that schools step in but they are not to do the WHOLE job. It takes a whole village to raise a child.

LOL I remmy my mom had joy of sex manual book hehe...

I haave to agree with you.. I don't even remember my parents talking about birds and bees....

I certainly don't even remember school teaching some either but I do remember reading lots info and etc... learn on my own. but with my own eyes watching my mom preaching to my sisters while I didn't know why they were in trouble and they end up havin' babies typically i was Young and tomboy who just cares by playing outside etc..

So.. that's why I want to keep talking with my kids until im out of thoughs LOL.. Maybe I will thank school for do some education but rest of it let me do it. or my husband and i will do it!

Wendy

Parents are letting the schools raise their children and yet they become angry at the school for telling the kids the wrong things.

Parents need to have frank talk about sex with their children.
