sneeze with mouth shut

I saw this somewhere but it said if you have ci and when you need to sneeze you have to do it with mouth open or leave nose alone like don't plug it with kleenex or finger to let air out or it will damage the internal processor, is that true?
Oh also I wonder if static electricity ever screw your ci up temporarily or permamently?
 
Well. when you first have your ci, you do need to sneeze with your mouth open as the eletrodes can be jarred by a sneeze and they can shift as a result. That's not something you want. When you heal from the operation, it's ok to sneeze with the mouth closed.

Well static electricty can wipe out your map but shouldn't cause lasting damage to your CI. You'll need to get a new map though if your map should get wiped out. I'm a bit wary about that as I don't want to drive like 2 1/2 hours to Chapel Hill for a new map.

ohh ok thanks for reply! im lucky i live only like 10 min from my ci center :D because in winter static electricity is so bad that im constantly getting shocked by my bf when kiss or holding hand or metal object when coming out of car
 
Forgot to mention that it can take 4 to six weeks to heal from surgery.

I was only told to take care with sneezing for 2 weeks after surgery while recovering but that even if you do sneeze, the chances are you'll be okay. Not all centres give out this advice. One tip I heard of to repress sneezing is to put your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Static electricity can screw up the speech processor temporarily. If it happens then people usually go to the audiologist to get the program reloaded. The audiologist always has a copy of your program on her system (and copies of old maps too). It doesn't happen very often for adults but can be an issue for kids if they go down a plastic slide or something. Mind you, I went down a plastic slide with my daughter and could feel the static electricity under me and suddenly remembered but my speech processor was fine. The static has to actually touch the processor to wipe the program.
 
I think they suggest to sneeze with your mouth open to standard with any surgery regarding ears, nose and throat. When I had my deviated septum surgery, I was told that. I can understand why since the pressure of a sneeze equal to 100mph. You certainly don't want that force to build up in there. Then again you have people like me who sneeze like a mouse. I wonder if anyone has picked that up with the CI. :)

After surgery, of course you have to be cautious as freshly cut tissue has still yet to heal and have a good grip on the internal processor components. Afterwards, sneeze as you will, but don't try intentionally blocking both your nose or mouth, thats pretty serious pressure we're talking about. As for electricity, the wall outlet kind can likely damage your internal processor permanently - don't even try it. Static wise, like mentioned above, it can corrupt your map. Try not to drag feet on carpet, or drag something large and metallic over a floor, or touch things that emit electromagnetic energy (monitor/TV screens, high voltage equipment and wires, etc). Also, if being shocked by someone is a common occurrence, have them or you touch something thats well grounded to allow the charge on you to be dispersed.
 
well when i was a kid...i remember sneezing with mouth closed and boogers would come flying outta my nose (ya i know ewww lol). now i sneeze with mouth open sending everything in front of me flying across the room. LOL

Man, I hate to say this but I think that'd make anyone sick when you snooze with your mouth open...

I'd rather go outside and snooze with my mouth open, if I were you. But sometimes, you'll never know when snooze occours...
 
How can you sneeze under control while it's a reflex, oh please! You cannot really control your reflexes when you sneeze or something like that.
 
Yes, it's a reflex but if you can feel a sneeze coming on, you can open your mouth before you start sneezing. I seem to sneeze a lot due to allergies..
 
Yeah, have to prepare before it happens, ha ha. I heard if you close mouth while you sneeze, it will HURT your head where CI processor implant was done recently. They suggest to open mouth and cover your mouth with your hands while sneezing to reduce pressure on the freshly implanted CI.

It's not true for eyeballs pops out if you sneeze with eye open!!!!! I just did sneezing with my eyes open and didn't poping out of my eye socket last night!!!!!! It was very hard to keep my eyes open while sneezing!!!!! LOL :giggle:
 
Did you know that if you burp and fart at the same time, it will allow your CI to pick up signals from the shuttle in space. ;)









Seriously, I don't see how sneezing would affect your CIs. :dunno:

I am so going to spend the next few hours trying to do this, just on the off chance that it might work. :lol:

It doesn't. But if you have a healing incision from an implant operation say a few days before, then the force of a sneeze could in theory put pressure on it. It would have to be a pretty big sneeze though and you'd have to be unlucky enough to be struck down with a cold right after the op. Usually, if you develop a bad cold before the operation they cancel you.
