OK.. first of all. This is not a thread for people to pick on me about smoking, its my choice and my consquences ok *stares at miss p* so please don't nag me or whatever..

second of all, i am having surgury on tuesday, and I cant smoke for 24 hours before surgery, so i am asking people who had been a smoker before and quit or whatever, I am curious.. what is the best way to stop smoking. Also what do you do to keep your mind off smoking?

Its all about willpower.. your mind may say smoke smoke smoke but you've got to beat it... I'm a smoker myself and been smoking on and off.. its willpower that you've got to beat.. keep yourself busy.. it will be hard for about a week.. You'll always feel you want one forever, you just have to keep saying no to yourself.. its going to make you feel cranky and moody but you can do it! So can I.. I'm thinking about quit smoking soon!!!!

Edit: forgot to add.. have a lot of faith in yourself!

DUH!!! TAKE THIS!!!!

And by the way, from the "Death Test" thread,

This is a good research...

Across all 874593 test takers.

Wow... 874,593 people... and only 17% of them smoke
That is good news, so hey smokers stop smoking!!!!

17% smoke.

Believe it or not, when I stopped smoking for 3 months cold turkey, I didnt have much problem. I even drank more beer instead of less..... basically it's all your mindset..... if you can convince yourself you dont nthe cigarette, you wont need it

I know it doesnt seem very helpful, but it really did work for me. I still had cravings but I could overcome them.

No Miss P.. its not because we like the smoking..

its called ADDICTION!!!!!

its like alcoholics, drug addict, compulsive, its all addiction.. same as smoking! its not weird.. that's not very encouraging for you to say.. and the Patch does give you bad side effects.. If you can be kind.. then try helpng instead of name calling..

that is because you are bored and why not get a hobby...
such as write a book about something, learn astrology...

stop thinking of something you can put in your mouth...

do something you can do with your mind and physically...

why not teach people how to sign language?

When I smoke, and when the surgery is coming up soon. I would stop thinking about it for a while. It doesn't bother me. It's like you sleep the good old 8 hours or 9 hours of sleep, would you smoke while sleeping? Think not. So it's the same thing. You need to be prepared. Hide your pack of ciggies somewhere. Eat fruits and water unless intructed by doc when you should NOT eat; usually after 8 p.m., brush your teeth, gargle with the rinse, go to sleep, wake up, get dressed, go straight to your car and drive off to the hospital or someone to drive you there. Viola, you won't be bother in the hospital with no smells of smoke around you. Once the surgery is done, you will stay in the hospital for a few days. If you can't help think about it..just don't think about it and sleep more. The nurses and doctors will let you sleep more than you can think of; good recovery especially a few walks around and eating meals. The more you recover, the more it will not bother you on the way home. Stay in the bed and still keep recovering with medications. Don't smoke while you're recovering because the smoking can lose some chance in recovery; infection will increase or the infection will not go down. Stay away from the ciggies until you are well-recover.

i have plenty of hobbies.. its not because I'm bored.. its because its an addiction and i don't know how many times I have to say it.. the narcotic is in the body system and makes you crave for cigs.. if you don't smoke and never have.. then you don't understand what it feels like.. so you shouldn't be in here saying stuff when you don't know what it's like!

well my grandma sucked on lemon drops seemed to help her. I guess just keeping something in her mouth.

I tried it.

I smoked the whole pack of ciggies...
And

I was thinking, what was so cool about smoking?

And I ain't addicted to it... I didn't care about smoking
and I didn't bother to buy more ciggies.

And just like beer, I drank the whole beer in the can,
and it doesn't affect me at all.

So I ain't an alcoholic nor addicted to smoke.

And I even try coffee, but I don't miss it.
I just drink it maybe twice a year, because I thought it was cool...
but I don't really like because it makes my chest hot.

So anyway...

Addiction is a myth.

So if you wanna smoke... then go ahead, it is just a waste of money.

The best way to stop smoking is chew minty gums because it's low in calories and it keeps the mouth busy for the next couple of hours. If you have the urge again then take another peice of gum or eat hard candies. How to keep your mind off smoking... try to keep yourself busy like raking leaves, go for a walk, but do leave cigs at home and do something you really enjoy. Anything that doesn't make you nervous, ya know?

Good luck on the surgery.
