CW saying goodbye to 'Smackdown'
CW saying goodbye to 'Smackdown' - CNN.com

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pro wrestling is getting smacked down by the CW network.

The long-running "Friday Night Smackdown" won't be airing on the CW this fall, the network and World Wrestling Entertainment said late Thursday. In separate announcements, they stated that "after a successful decade of 'Smackdown,"' they had agreed to conclude their partnership after the 2007-08 season.

No reasons were offered.

WWE, based in Stamford, Connecticut, added that it began talks with other networks after the CW's exclusive period to negotiate a renewal ended January 31.

Although no details were disclosed for a possible new home for the show, candidates might include NBC Universal, whose USA cable channel already carries "WWE Raw," and MyNetworkTV, where some affiliates aired "Smackdown" when they were UPN stations.

The two-hour "Smackdown" premiered on then-fledgling UPN in fall 1999 as strategic counterprogramming on Thursdays. "Smackdown" gave UPN a foothold on that night of bruising prime-time competition, but even as a ratings contender, it proved to be a sometimes uncomfortable fit with UPN's image.

When UPN, owned by CBS, merged with Warner Bros.' WB in 2006, "Smackdown" seemed no less out of place on the resulting CW network.

I know I read the newspaper, WWE Smackdown are no longer for CW. They aren't offered with CW. WWE will find other network, maybe go to back to My 9 channel. I hope I will see it. I love watch WWE Smackdown.

^^^ I am sure WWE will put other great local channels such as NBC or whatever... SD! will continue air on CW till Sept 08

No idea which network they will move after Sept 20 (or something), 2008, so WWE has 7 months leave to find their new network for SD!

Could be that they thinking about going back to NBC? NBC used to broadcast WWE in 80's to 90's.

WWE seek highest bidder out of many tv/cable networks?

SpikeTV won't need WWE since they got TNA (their contact will be expire by Fall 2009) and UFC (their contract will be expire at the end of 2008 and both are in negoitable for beyond 2008).

Hmm...TNT , FX or USA?
Could be take by Nickelodeon or Disney then put HHH vs Spongebob (Spongebob will win easy) ;)

NBC got Saturday Night Main Event (they have 2 more left), maybe NBC is willing to put SD! on their network since WWE RAW on USA Network and ECW on Sci Fi, both network are under to NBC

WWE doesnt want to go back to Spike TV... I am sure TNA and UFC will continue their contract with Spike TV so no need WWE put SD! on Spike TV

WWE hate TNT after WWE buyout WCW (Monday Night Nitro), ha
FX is under to Fox Network, so no
USA has RAW, so no
Nickelodeon or Disney might could have WWE's cartoon show? ha if so, I wanna see Mickey Mouse def Cena easily ;)

its official!

According to an article that was posted on TVWeek.com, two companies remain in the bidding war to air Smackdown once the show ends its run on the CW Network in september. The article states that MyNetworkTV & Tribune Broadcasting remain bidders for the series.

MyNetworkTV is made up primarily of UPN stations that were not rolled into the CW network when UPN & the WB merged. If Tribune Broadcasting would win the bid, Smackdown would most likely be aired on Superstation WGN. Tribune could also put the show in syndication, although the company recently moved to shut down its syndication business.
