Sleeping Beauty attracts attention worldwide - Seven News Queensland
A British girl who sleeps for days at a time is attracting worldwide attention.
Louisa Ball suffers from Kleine-Levin Syndrome, nicknamed Sleeping Beauty Sickness.
It's a condition that reportedly can't be cured, but that clears up after eight or more years.
Louisa's longest sleep lasted 13 days. Her parents are said to wake her up during sleeps for food and bathroom visits.
Her story was reported in the UK's News of the World, and then picked up by television stations and websites in the United States.
It's thought there are only a few thousand people worldwide with the same condition.
NBC reports that some can go days or weeks with normal sleep patterns, but then may fall asleep for days at a time.
Her mother Lottie told NBC's Today about her daughter's first bout.
"We couldn't wake her up," she said.
"It was just really constant 'Louisa, will you get up, please. Have something to eat.' She couldn't have the energy to just open her eyelids."
Louisa is quoted as saying, "I'm so upset about having this illness... I know there's so much I'm missing out on."
