Ahhh...thanks dear...now I know which one she is...and that's the same one that drove away from the house during one of the family gathering and moments later came back cuz she forgotten her purse! Oppsieeee!! :|

This just in from the Birmingham newspaper. Dated April 29th in the Metro/State section. They are conducting a studdy now on old peoples driving, and should put into law that they should restrict people over 68 to day time driving and eye exams. Not only that they want to do it when drivers turn 20 since eyes can change between 16 and 20. So By this time next year there should be laws in place to protect us from old people.

my neighbor who is 80 or 90 - just bought a new car and was just in the local news as the oldest woman driver. she also happens to be my sis in law's grandmother in law. havent seen her hit someone.... yet!

Must be her lucky everyday!

I dont think cut-off for older Adults or senios should be an issue... cuz few weeks ago I was driving on highway in Denver on my way to a location and some how I saw two old couple was speeding by on highway beating me and other teenagers on the road... I saw the police point radar at them but do nothing... geez! :madfawk: at police!

Well, the elderly shouldn't be limited as to means of transportation based on their age. If they are still able to follow the rules of the road and can still properly handle a car, then it really should not be an issue. Sure, they're old, and they might drive a little bit slower than us speed demons, but hey, that's why most roads have more than one lane. Don't feel comfortable around old drivers? Go ahead and pass them. :) But hey, I think that most people, whether they are old or young, have the ability to tell whether or not they are able to handle driving a car.

I bowl with this woman - she's well into her eighties, and she still has quite an active social life. I drive her to bowling on Friday nights since she lives around the corner from us. She is able to run her own errands and even does volunteer work. Her husband is 10 years deceased and she lives alone...yet she still has the strength to do her own shopping, housework, etc. She even puts up a Christmas tree yearly. :) AND she drives, too...but she does feel uncomfortable driving at night so this is why I do the driving on Fridays.

Point is, even though she's old, she knows her limits. I wish more people would do that, ya know? I dunno...there probably won't ever be a cut off age, but I think as people get older and older, their desire to drive will eventually cease and then they'll stick to walking or taking a bus or calling a younger grandchild or relative to come and pick them up. :)

Just my thoughts anyhow. :)

Yeah, it's important that older drivers and inexperienced drivers alike should know their limits and be tested annually to ensure they're progressing OK in driving and their eye sights aren't impairing their driving skills, etc.

Here in Australia -- those who start drivin for the first time go on 'L's' -- Learner's for the first 3 months and must be with a licensed person over the age of 25, not allowed to drive by themselves and must practise driving in all kinds of driving conditions such as raining, windy, etc. (must display a bright yellow 'L' on their cars)
After that and obtaining their 'P's' - Probationary - they're allowed to drive by themselves, but must display a red 'P' sticker on their cars...and have an .00 alcohol intake (not allowed to have any alcohol in their bodies at all when driving). The Probationary period lasts for 3 years. If they go 3 years with infringments (tickets for speeding, illegal parking and so forth) but still have points left over from 12 points...then they can get full license and no need to have the P sticker on their cars. Another thing during the 3 year probationary period -- they're not allowed to drive nor own a v8 type car (high powered and fast cars)
When getting full licenses -- they're allowed to drive v8 cars...any types of high powered cars, can have alcohol (use judgement of course).

NB: that's one of the reasons why my step son wants to move to USA because there's no laws against driving a v8 car when just getting a driver license for the first time.

As for elderly drivers -- they're allowed to drive as long as they are re-tested every year to ensure they're still safe drivers and their eye sight are checked as well. In only exceptional cases, older drivers' licenses will be revoked are when they have either caused an accident or can't see properly...and so on.

Yes, it's irritating to wind up stuck behind an elderly driver and they're extra SLOW!!! Augh..haha! Unfortunately, that's one of the few triggers to the ever increasing numbers of road rage these days.

Yeah, I agree with Malfy that there won't ever be a law passed where there's a cut-off time for elder drivers any more than there will ever be a law passed wherein one must pass a "emotional stability/capacity" type test. I have seen those, too and YIKES!! And they are in their 20's, 30's......
