Ottawa police are looking for a man they say entered the apartment of a 91-year-old woman in Nepean and sexually assaulted her.

They say a white male between 20 and 40 years of age entered the woman's apartment through her unlocked front door during the afternoon late last week with the specific intent of sexually assaulting her.

Without speaking to the woman, the man grabbed her and carried her into a bedroom where he began the assault.

When he finished, he immediately left the apartment, police said.

None of the woman's belongings were taken by the intruder.

"The woman absolutely does not know the person. It was purely sexually motivated," said Det. Gina Rosa of the police force's sexual assault, child abuse section.

The victim has had trouble providing police with many specific details, so information is sketchy.

The woman was found in the apartment by a family member, who took her to hospital. Police were notified on Monday.

Police had no description of the suspect as of last night, aside from saying the man was white and was last seen wearing dark pants.

Det. Rosa said the attack is an isolated incident and no other similar reports have been received.

Police used the incident to stress that seniors need to take extra precautions to safeguard themselves when at home.

Al Loney, the executive director of the seniors' organization the Council on Aging of Ottawa, said in most cases of abuse against seniors, the person being abused has a relationship with the abuser.

He said situations such as this one, where the victim does not know the attacker, are rare.

He said the attacker must have watched the woman and known that she would be alone before he acted.

"The person who did this probably knew that she was on her own and that there wouldn't be anyone to offer her assistance or come to her aid," he said. "This is a very awful situation. What kind of animal would do this kind of thing?"

Mr. Loney said the incident underscores why senior citizens must make sure their homes are always secured. He said the days when people could leave their front doors unlocked are long gone.

Mr. Loney has already replaced the doors on his home with ones that are more sturdy and have multiple locks.

He also advised seniors to try to avoid letting people know they live alone.

According to the Department of Justice, approximately seven per cent of senior citizens involved in a 1999 study reported that they have been the victims of abuse.

The investigation into the assault is ongoing.

Later on the news the elderly woman said she was probably picked because she has the body of a 65 year old...i thought hey more power to u if your older and have that much confidence in yourself and your body!

People are becoming sicker and sicker these days though, come on...to sexually assault an elderly woman, especially in her 90's is highly sickening and that person def needs a good slap across the head and a orange jumpsuit!
