Sewage Backup

My poor next door neighbors had sewage in their basement for the SECOND TIME last night! My mother heard the red light alarm go off outside down across the road from us, and we were wondering what had happened....there was a fire truck and a police car there.
It turns out that there was something wrong with the sewage system, and all the crap from the houses on our street went right into my neighbors' basement (it was low in the ground). The fire truck and police didn't make it in time to stop the red light alarm which was for the sewage system, and it ended up flooding their basement.
We have a sign in our yard next to the lake we live in that says "no swimming" because the water in the lake has the "mess" in it now....so they are working to get rid of it out of the basement. We can't get on our dock because of the nasty water. :blink:
Have anyone here ever heard of this before too?
 
Erk...that's bad. :barf: It's never happened to me nor in the neighbourhoods where I've lived.

Which state do you live in? How did the sewage get into the basement? Did it back up thru a toilet? Or did the sump pump back up? Basements with toilets and sumps usually have one-way valves to prevent back up. How did the sewage get into the lake? Was that from the pump station dumping into the lake to prevent flooding all the other houses?

That is a nasty accident. We don't have basements here in SC but my hubby's family in MI do have basements, so he is very curious about that.
 
Also tree roots are sometimes a culprit for sewage lines backing up...happened where I used to live several years ago...not even anywhere near a lake or didn't have heavy rain...turned out that a tree root bursted thru a line and blocked it and the sewage ended up in the basement where I was at, but unfortunately, I didn't have a 'floater' which enables a drain (where the back up sewer came up in) not to flood....but learned the hard way....most definitely!! After ALLL that cleaning up to do...I swore that was gonna to be the LAST time that would ever happen!!

I live in Florida (yes, where the hurricanes were at).

The problem is that the basement was very deep in the ground, and the sewage had to come out of somewhere so it went through the toliet from the basement. It was very wet in the ground right now. The neighbors' first floor is high above the ground, like ours.

Ah, that makes sense; now I understand. It is too bad they didn't have the kind of toilet that has a one-way valve that prevents that.

I hope you are not hit again by hurricane Ivan.
 
Oh phewww! i bet the whole area stank up high heavens!! i feel sorry for you all and hope the problem is taken care of by now!!...
