Setting up new house

ooo 6 years old? better check if battery's still alive!
If memory serves me right, a hard-wired smoke alarm w/battery backup will still let you know when the battery is dying.

They do a slow beep, but if you can't hear the beep....

Best idea is to change the batteries when we change the clocks ahead or back in the spring and fall.

Batteries are replaced regularly. Whenever they start beeping. About once a year or so ...

But they're hardwired so no worries :)

No, my life is better than being cheap. That's why I did not say cheap per se'. Since we are having to pay so much for special windows and all, I am looking to not break the budget. The contractor will hardwire whatever I need and he is aware I am in need of things.

My main question was, is smoke/fire and doorbell all I really need? Thanks for the helpful info and the links. I will check them out and see what the contractor can do.

Well, a portable unit like alert master has all this plus more for ways to add on if needed instead of breaking budget. you will want to add on the phone alert as well.

The reason I brought up the hardwired unit is because of local codes. some say you MUST have hardwire fire alarm, there is no point spending money on a sound one you cant hear when you can spend another 60 bucks for a flasher . same goes with carbon monoxide detector. You need to check with local building code and see what they say.

not always true. My hardwired unit upstairs has a battery in it for backup. You might want to check yours anyway. I am willing to bet it has a battery too....:P

I was talking about MINE.

Whenever my smoke alarms start beeping to alert of a low battery, I replace it.

They are also hardwired.

I'm not sure what was difficult to understand?

nothing difficult.. its a good thing you can hear the low batt beep.

Went to the Town Hall to verify again about the building codes for the smoke/fire alarms and such. The man that knew was out of the office and will call me back.

Get it in writing (printed copy of code).

Still waiting to hear about those coeds. There was massive police activity in the area and all business were shut down from 6am to about 9am. There is still a manhunt on for a 4th suspect of a "bump & run". Got 3 in custody.

Loan was approved and hopefully construction will start now in early to mid June. Contractor has a rough estimate or $60,000 and it may go to $75,000, but we are getting a $100,000 loan, so all will go well. Contractor wanted to do the hard-wired smoke alarms and his electrician's bid included the 4 smoke alarms and 2 fire alarms all with strobe lights. The building contractor already informed the plumbing and electrician guys that there is one senior citizen and one deaf person with mobility issues. They are including special things in their bids on the job. Lady from my Deaf Service Center said in her mind, of the two monitoring systems I picked, Clarity or Sonic, she would go with the Sonic. She also suggests that I register with the fire department and the natural disaster office to let them know that there is a deaf person in residence in case of hurricanes or damaging storms. When I contacted them, they said that they already have me down for this house, and to call back after the construction is done. They also have the info on my mother as well.
