Seniors suspended over T-shirts

Educators say drinking theme went too far; 44 students may also miss prom, commencement.

Tanveer Ali / The Detroit News

LIVONIA -- For as long as students at Stevenson High School could remember, seniors have been making T-shirts meant to shock their teachers in the final weeks of the school year.

But this year, administrators are taking a strict stance -- suspending 44 seniors Thursday for wearing T-shirts with "Puschin' It To The Limit" on the front and "Class of .08 Seniors" on the back, in reference to the legal blood-alcohol level for drivers.

They were hit with a one-day suspension and could potentially be kept from attending their prom and commencement, said Principal Steven Archibald. "This was premeditated," Archibald said. "They knew it was wrong. They knew it was going to be a disruption."

Archibald sent an e-mail to parents Monday after he was tipped off about this year's controversial shirt. In past years, staff members have asked the students to change or turn the shirts inside out, but Archibald said a strong message had to be sent that underage drinking cannot be endorsed.

Near the end of every school year, the 2,100-student high school celebrates Spirit Week with the "Ripening of the Tomato" in which classes wear T-shirts representing their level of maturity. Freshmen wear green, seniors red. Seniors say about 160 "Class of .08" T-shirts were sold.

"It's been a senior tradition to make a shirt that offends the administration," said suspended student Brad Young. "I just don't understand that the new standard comes in now."

The suspended students were kept from attending an honors ceremony Thursday night. Archibald said he would talk to the students while others go to a pep rally today and would likely allow the suspended students to attend next Friday's prom and the June 6 commencement if they maintain good behavior and complete a writing assignment about underage drinking.

Dawn Lewis, 47, said she discussed Archibald's e-mail with her 11th-grade daughter. Lewis said it would have been more reasonable to punish the person who was behind the shirts, rather than penalize nearly 10 percent of the senior class. "They're kids. What are you going to do?" Lewis said.

*groans*

Here we go again with the school getting stupid over stupid shirts.

I do CONGRATS them for doing that! It shows that teenagers want to drink which means the underage drinking policy has to go.

No doubt! They need to worry more about what is going into these kids' brains than what they have on their back!

Yeah... it seems that we see a lot of these kids getting suspended over nothing while they don't do anything about the real problem... bullying... abuse... etc.

The greater sense of satisfaction will come from the the seniors who were suspended. They did succeed in offending the administration, earning their class a badge of honor.

Accepting the consequences of their action(s) is more honorable than an administration deciding to break tradition.

:gpost: you have a point there. I think they felt that they have enough of what is right or wrong. I think they want the students not to go on the drinking alcohol and not become an alcoholics later in their lives. I guess they want them to be smart and say no to all drugs and alcohol. It is not healthy to our brains and our health, too. Do alcoholics have to end up in the Alcoholics Anonmenous( spell?) meetings. And also have family members who live with alcoholics have to go into Al-Anon meetings to learn how to stop and not drink and family members to learn how to deal with alcoholics by understanding that being addiction to alcohol is a disease. That is something young people need to think about. If they say that "Nah, that would never happen to me" but it will if that happen and you get hook to alcohol for a long time. Once an alcoholic, always a alcoholic. Hope that helps you understand what I am talking about. :fingersx:

The shirts used the legal limit for B.A.C. driving. Nowhere on the shirts does it recommend that you to drink or drink and drive. If anything, the shirts were Public Service Announcements, reminding everyone the legal B.A.C. for driving.

A shirt with the legal B.A.C. limit do not turn people in alcoholics.

Yeah, I think the zero tolerance policy has went too far in some cases at some schools. In a way it is good but in another way, it isn't. It's like over exceeding their control. That shirt the seniors made was just only for their selves, nothing more. The school should be able to be efficient on other problems, rather than making a field day over this specific shirt.

*yea!* if i were in that shoes, i'll probably part of that team because its just only NUMBERS!! dang!

where's our right? Accord to US rights.. do we have that problem with that rights? Yo, i was part of Class of 01', and there are several staff dislike that numbers because of "sexual number" you know... dont have to describe that number 01.

I stood up and spoke up,(i never forget that) "it is only numbers and you may tear, remove, throw, and destory the numbers, BUT you cant remove our hearts where we truly belong to graduate. Why do you do that to us? Let us to share the memories as you had made. Look at class of 81', its same part of the describe of sexual. Look at class of '69, there are SEVERAL numbers that are sexuals but hey its only numbers. I dont care if you wont give me dipolma or certificate. I dont give a sh**, as long i am PROUD of my class."

i believe that they stood up what they want. i dont have problem with that.
