RIYADH (Reuters) - A Saudi man has divorced his wife by text message, a newspaper said on Thursday.

The man was in Iraq when he sent the SMS informing her she was no longer his spouse. He followed up with a telephone call to two of his relatives, the daily Arab News reported.

A court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah finalised the split -- the first known divorce in Saudi Arabia by text message -- after summoning the two relatives to check they had received word of the husband's intention, the paper said.

Saudi Arabia practises a strict form of Islamic Sharia law, and clerics preside over Sharia courts as judges. Under the law a man can divorce his wife by saying "I divorce you" three times.

The Saudi man was in Iraq to participate in "what he described as 'jihad'," according to the Arab News. Many Saudis have gone to fight with al Qaeda militants against the Iraqi government and U.S. forces.

Just a divorce over a text message?

Gee. That's got to be one of the strangest news I've heard of.

Just shows you the massiveness of the technology. Pretty soon we'll be divorcing each other here in the United States via text message.

You go file the divorce papers and send a text message to your spouse that you divorce them out of the blue.

In the US.

The other spouse does not even have to be present.

One or the other just go before a judge.

A spouse does not even have to be present or served.

I thought this was a bit of a strange story but its always fun to read these nutty stories.

Lucky woman, I'd say :)

Now she can move along and find a man worthy of her.

Ouch! That man doesn't have any balls to face his wife for a divorce and to end it over the text messages makes him a coward. Seriously!

I heard about this new "law" that they could do this, and now I'm reading proof that they're doing this! WOW! whatever happened to common courtesy? :rofl2:

Twitter is all aflutter they didn't think of this first.
