Ryan is making us all so proud - Northants ET
A deaf teenager who raised hundreds of pounds for charity has been nominated for a Pride in Northamptonshire award.
Ryan Coles, 13, raised £715 for Northamptonshire-based charity Deafconnect by organising his own plant sale and coffee morning.
The Irthlingborough youngster put a lot of work into the sale, including potting and seeding his own plants, arranging for plants to be sent from local garden centres, asking his family to bake cakes to sell, designing posters to publicise the sale and selling tickets to family and friends.
On the morning of the sale, he arranged the stalls in his garden and drafted in volunteers to help make tea and coffee and sell cakes.
Mum Debbie Coles said: "We are extremely proud of Ryan because he wanted so much to raise money for the charity that had supported him since the age of four, when he was diagnosed as deaf.
"He is very conscious that he is not the only person who is deaf, and that with more funding Deafconnect can go on to help more deaf children.
"Deafconnect suppported me when Ryan was young and helped me to learn sign language, so it is nice to be able to give something back."
Ryan said: "I thought it would be a good idea to pay Deafconnect back and to say thank you.
"I was shocked by how much we raised – it was fantastic."
As a reward for his fundraising, Krista Brocklehurst, who works at Deafconnect, has nominated Ryan for the young achiever of the year category in the Evening Telegraph's Pride in Northamptonshire awards, run in conjunction with Northamptonshire County Council.
She said: "We are very proud to have such active members of our community. What Ryan did for us was very special.
"He involved his whole community in the sale and did a great job.
"Deafconnect runs summer trips to places such as Wicksteed Park and Hamerton Zoo, which gives children who are being educated in mainstream schools the chance to be with other deaf children for the day.
"This is the sort of thing we might spend the money on, but we want to make sure Ryan is involved in the decision."
The Pride awards night will be held at Wicksteed Park Pavilion, Kettering, on September 26, with television star and former Big Brother winner Brian Dowling presenting the awards.
