i was born 12 weeks early in March '90. I am the second of triplets. I was born weighing 2lb 1oz or 935g. I suffered fits during my first 24 hours. I had so much blood transfusion and am not allowed to give blood now because of this. I was transferred to a larger hospital with a SCBU(special care baby unit) at 2 days old due to being a shortage of incubators at my local hospital. I went with my 1st born sister and the other one was sent to a hospital about 30 miles from us. My parents were 24 and also had my brother 2 1/2 to look after. I was born with all sort of problems. me and my surviving sister went home from hospital about 3 months old. My other sister died aged 5 months in hospital. I was under the care of a eye specialist due to my mild ROP till I was 1. My mum suspected a hearing loss but didnt not know what degree due to me falling asleep anywhere and not responding as my sister (hearing) was. I had balance problems and was not able to sit by myself, walk until I had physio from 1 year, i finally was able to walk at 9 months.I was diagnosed as severely deaf at 9 months and given hearing aids at 14 months. I attended an infant program at my future deaf school from 2 years once a week with my mother. I attended my deaf school nursery from 3 years. I did not speak until I was in Reception properly. I used signs to communicate before I learnt to speak. I then went through school and was known as M the magnificent as I was the only pupil in the school to understand joke, to be able to talk as well as i did due to my hearing loss. My hearing detoriated aged 9, i went through a ci assessment and was accepted for a implant. I was assessed for a implant aged 5 but i had too much "hearing". I am now severe-profoundly deaf. I played the clarinet in high school at 11 years for about a year. I started speech therapy at school which i hated because i didnt like being corrected in my speech and i missed swimmin and pe which i loved at the time. I am now 18 years old and in college studying childcare. I do a work placement at a local school every other week. I enjoying communicating with children and can understand them well while lipreading and occasionally can hear them without lipreading. I love life so much and would like to talk to more people online. Occasionally im told I speak very well, I thank my cochlear implant for that! Before my implant I was not really able to hear many sounds or say SH, S, or CH. Sorry this was long
my surviving sister was the biggest at 2lb 9oz and was given a 20 percent of survival, even less for me and my other sister who unfortunately didnt make it.
my parents were told to expect lots of severe problems from us two. I'm only deaf from the drugs. It's better off than being dead. I did have asthma from eight which went away. My mum was told that it was because of me being on oxygen in SCBU, but she has been told recent it wasnt.
