Hello. I am new to the forums. I have some questions that I hope someone can help me answer.

What are the guidelines that define whether or not someone is deaf and/or disabled?

Also, can anyone give me an idea on what technologies are available for those who are congenitally deaf in one ear? Is the equipment of choice still the hearing aid that transfers sound from one ear to the other?

Can anyone recommend any institutes or hospitals that specialize in hearing research?

Thanks

Do you have congenital single-sided deafness? I’ve become somewhat of an armchair expert on the subject lately—I could give you a rundown on what the currently available treatment options are.

Thanks for your reply Levonian. Yes, I have congenital single-sided deafness. Any information you have would be a tremendous help and much appreciated.

Thanks.

I do know that educationaly speaking unilateral losses, are classified as "hoh"
Bilateral cases, the dividing line between hoh and deaf is 70 dcb.
The CROS/BiCROS hearing aid is still used, but there is also a new thingy called the BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) that was approved for treatment of SSD recently. From what I understand, it works as a more effectent CROS/BiCROS aid.
