Hey everyone!

I know Eldridge covers education, legal, medical, etc. I am wondering how much of medical it covers? Does this count for Physiotherapists? Optometrists? Dentists? I should really know these things already...kind of ashamed that I don't!

Under the Canada Health Act, you are entitled to medical professionals needed to help you.

Under the Canada Health Act, Ontario is required to fund necessary hospital and medical or primary care (i.e., physician) services. But we go beyond those legal obligations to provide a wide range of other health services. Ontario health insurance also pays for:
  • a variety of community services, such as home care and other support services that help people manage chronic illnesses and live independently
  • community mental health services for people with mental health problems
  • a portion of the cost of care provided by long-term care homes that provide residential care for people who are no longer able to live independently
  • most of the cost of prescription drugs for seniors (age 65 and over), people on social assistance, and Ontario residents who face high drug costs

With the Eldridge v. British Columbia, Robin Eldridge's communication rights were infringed because neither social and medical programs paid for the sign language interpreters.

Medical care in British Columbia is delivered through two primary mechanisms. Hospital services are funded under the Hospital Insurance Act by the government which reimburses them for the medically required services provided to the public. Funding for medically required services delivered by doctors and other health care practitioners is provided by the province’s Medical Services Plan (established and regulated by the Medical and Health Care Services Act). Neither program pays for sign language interpretation for the deaf.
Supreme Court of Canada

The failure of the Medical Services Commission and hospitals to provide sign language interpretation where it is necessary for effective communication constitutes a prima facie violation of the s. 15(1) rights of deaf persons. ibid

Eldridge will cover medical and legal bills that derives from the injury you sustained and there on.

Hope this helps.
