I'm trying to find information on the internet, about a hoax that took place in 1987. This was a hoax about a black girl who was found outside in a plastic trash bag with shit smeared all over her, and stuff written on her like "Ku Klux Klan and ****** and stuff like that....There was a BIG media fallout....Does anyone know the name of the girl in the case, so I can find more info about this case?

REALLY weird.....I was in second grade and I don't even remember that case!I was in the library and picked up a true crime book about the case.....weird that I don't remmy this, but I remmy like DPN and Rodney King, and Jeffery Dahmer and stuff like that......

I was in High School at that time and already knew about that because it had a lot of the bigwigs like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson inputting their feelings into this and only to later we all learned such a case could blow up in a person's face regardless of race.

I just find it WEIRD that until recently I'd never heard of that case b/c I am a HUGE HUGE media junkie

I was in high school at the time in 1987 too....but I don't remember this case. I was probably into a lot of homework at the time. LOL I do remember the Challenger explosiion, Jessica in the well, and several others though. :)

Maybe it was because I loved reading all sorts of papers which included the trash papers a la "The National Enqiurer". :giggle:

Yea, I remember that hoax like it was yesterday. It was pretty bizarre when all the details came out...

One hypothesis was that since Tawana had already been grounded on the day she skipped school to visit her ex-boyfriend, she had made up the story of her abduction in order to avoid further punishment.

All because she didn't want to serve her Mommy's punishment.

It was the pivotal case of the 80's especially because it involved the bigwigs like I mentioned, they freely used the "racism" card. To this day, I still wonder why she would do such a thing when people genuinely go through this on a daily basis. Call it sheer idiocy or ignorance.

I remmy baby Jessica too!

I remember the manpower, the efforts America banded together for a cute baby but what made me really wonder.. why didn't they share those for the other unfortunate countries that was going through harsh times as well. Sure a wee baby was in the well but we've got half the world in bad times as well? Chris discussed this in his sociology class and I discussed this in my history class.

I remember the Tawana Brawley hoax.

Al Sharpton used it to promote his career.

The hoax destroyed the lives of innocent white law officials.

It was awful how people used the hoax for personal advantage and to stir up racial conflict.

What do you mean? I don't understand what saving a baby out of a well has to do with world problems. Can you please explain more details?

We had all those manpower meaning the money to transport such a huge machine to drill a separate hole for the men to crawl into so they could rescue Jessica. The night lights they kept on, the generators and so on. The huge bill itself.. call me uber-cheap but I am sure there were ways to rescue Baby Jessica. (Unless I am having a blonde moment here.... ) :Ohno:

They used the best, safest method that they could.

I don't think the rescue cost effected the condition of the rest of the world.

If it was your baby, how much would you want them to spend to save her? Would you say, "Oh, that costs too much; don't try to save her that way."
