I'm frustrated about Sims games (Sim City 4 and The Sims 2) are extremely lag on my computer and tried update on most of hardware and none of them are help. I have no idea to fix it but seems lost on video support, such as NVIDIA or ATI. I want make games to more smooth without any lag but feel like to looking for new computer tower.

I got computer in 2003.
Intel Premium 4
2.6 GHz
512MB RAM
64MB Video Memory
80GB Hard Drive
Not said about ATI or NVIDIA

I would appreciate if anyone help with me.

If you open your PC case and look at video card, you could see companys name, sometimes model number stamped on it. 512MB of RAM should be ok, but FYI the better quality of videocard *DO* help some games. Maybe you should upgrade your video card.

I don't find any graphic card in PCI (same as video card) but think about want go to Best Buy and order new graphic card, and its called ATI Radeon 9250.
ATI - RADEON 9250 Graphics Card - 100-436012

try find brand of video card in your PC. Here go click start/control panel/display/click setting on the top tab/advance/click either ATI or NIVIDIA.

Also what is current versions?. Hope it help you find it.

Mine is ATI 9800 PRO 128MB and CATALYST Version 6.8

Make sure check for new update version.

Forget one thing. I notice most newer game is more demand a good video card. 128 or higher should be ok. Last time two years ago my video card is 64MB and it kill my some games. So I upgrade and bought new video card 128 and it much better. For today I was plan buy ATI for 512MB but $$$$$ geee. I am still undecided should go head buy video card or buy whole new tower.

The Simcity 4 IS the problem because there have been issues with the lag even on a fast computer no matter how fast the video card or the processor is. The game is poorly written by programmers. I do not know about Sims 2, anyhow.

LOL... I found out that's not compatible with Sim City 4.

Really? I had talked to some members on Sim City 4 forum and most of them don't have problem with lag and run so smooth. They said it was problem with graphic card.

Do you have same problem? I thought that Windows and Mac are different but I don't find any graphic card (PCI) that support on Mac at Best Buy and Compusa.

The problem with Simcity 4 is that it's poorly written application and that's why it is causing lag even on a fast PC OR Mac. Don't bother with fast computer upgrade or video card upgrades, it's NOT the problem. There's nothing you can do about it. They are currently creating new Simcity 5, but who knows how well it runs.

Most new Macs do not run on old PCI 33/66 MHz, they run on AGP 4x or 8x or PCI-Express (faster than AGP). My ATI radeon 9800 runs on AGP 4x bus. (it's old Mac made in 2001)

Oh, I got it.

Does I need sell Sim City 4 or keep as collection? I can't wait to check on Sim City 5.

I see about new model of Mac with different PCI. Do you like to buy Mac with Intel in their machine and seems would improving their speed or not sure. Your graphic card (ATI) is good enough for some games to work. I had realized that old Windows XP is run so slower and not know about Mac.

Barely good enough for some of the video card heavy games with my current video card. I don't play games that much so I'm not worried. In my opinion, consoles are better for video games than on Mac or PC because you don't have to upgrade to play the latest games. Video game consoles don't have to be upgraded to play the latest games smoothly, unless it's a new generation console which is a generation ahead.

IF you want to sell your Simcity 4 collection, your call. It's your decision. I haven't played Simcity 4 for a long time since, though.

Yea, I agree with you about need release Sim City 4 on gaming consoles, such as Sim City 2000 was released on Super Nintendo and GBA. I'm not sure that Sim City 4 would handle with CPU.

I notice your video card is Extreme Graphics. It was sucks. I had other computer same as your video card. I replace ATI and installed. ATI and NIVIDIA is good either. depend on your comfortable afford price for replace new video card. I suggest that 128MB or higher is still good enough.

Pacman...wait minutes that is for your laytop or desktop?. You mention that XP window is slower. HUMMM?. Strange....mine is pretty fast.

I'm using desktop and it was around 3 years old.

After installed Google Earth, Paint Shop Pro, Limeware and other programs that cause slowdown on my computer and tried recovred about 3 times then none of them are work.

Yea, I need replace new video card to make Google Earth so faster, same with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.

After get ATI then need remove the old video card (Intel Extreme Graphics)?

If you can't find any PCI card in there or AGP, then your motherboard got built in video adapter. It won't be easy to disable onboard video adapter. Took me 6 hours and full of pissing around. Finally got AGP recongized by BIOS.
Often built in video adapter on motherboard is minimum or "Cheapest" if you want to call it.

As what other ADers suggestion, they are good, but not always accurate, sometimes you can look in Windows config and they can tell you something else than really is. So, I always prefer check on wheather there is adapter added to motherboard so I can get concrete information.

Have you scan for spy-wares, Mal-wares etc?
These "Mini-viruses" can slow down your PC considerable.
