Theft Occurred About 7 A.M.
BOSTON -- There were some tense moments in Brockton, Mass., Tuesday morning as state police searched for a car stolen from a driveway with a 6-month-old baby inside.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that officers found the car close to two hours later abandoned in front of a house on Elm Avenue, the infant girl unharmed inside.
"I walked up to the right rear and looked directly inside the back seat to see if the child was there and I looked down, and I was very happy to see the child. She was sound asleep, oblivious to what was going on," said Brockton police Officer Edward Abdelnour.
An ambulance was dispatched to the scene to examine the baby, and she was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
"The child was smiling and very playful upon arrival at the emergency department this morning," said Dr. James Thomas.
Investigators said the green, 1995 Lexus ES300 was taken from a Newbury Street driveway about 7 a.m. while the infant was inside. Police said the baby's 16-year-old mother was driving her uncle's car without a license and left the child inside and the motor running at a friend's house.
"I was in the bedroom at 6 o'clock this morning and hollering to my daughter to come on and go to school and we heard the car screech out and they had the baby in the back seat," said friend Pam Gilmer.
At about 8:44 a.m., troopers confirmed they had located the car four blocks from where it was stolen. Police will gather evidence from the vehicle.
"Any officer, any parent, I think any grandparent, anyone, whenever there is a child involved, you're are always nervous, you are always a little bit scared and you are always happy to find them," said Abdelnour.
The mother was interviewed by the Department of Social Services and may face charges, including operating without a driver's license.
