INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -
Police are investigating the death of an elderly woman.
Her body was found Sunday inside an apartment at Hawthorne Place on Spring Lake Drive off East Fifth Street. Police believe her body has been in the apartment for about three weeks.
A neighbor called police after she noticed the smell, and the woman's mail piling up outside.
"It is kind shocking that she was dead for weeks and no one smelled anything," said neighbor Dawn Winslow.
Neighbors say the woman had lived there about two years.
The woman's name has not been released, and police are still investigating the case.
The woman had been there so long that her skin reportedly had fused to her chair. The woman's death is believed to have occurred from natural causes and no charges are expected.
However, that was not the case for another Independence woman who was found fused to her chair last fall.
Charges were filed against that woman's son.
