Hi-
My name is Kelly and I'm an ASL 2 student in Humboldt County, California. I go to college at Humboldt State University. I'm a finance major and hope to minor in American Sign Language. I also am fluent in Spanish. Eventually I would love to incorporate both my Spanish abilities and my Sign language and take a job as an interpreter for a few years. I think that would just be so fascinating! I'm here to ask for a little help from all of you...

I'm doing a research paper on technological advances and how they affected Deaf people around the world. Specifically I've discussed open and closed captioning, the use of the TTY, video to video phones, and other similar things of interest such as doorbell lights, and flashing alarm clocks and smoke detectors.

I'm interested in knowing how any of these advances changed your life. Whether it be for the better, or the worse. Do you feel as if these technologies have better helped the hearing world connect to you, and you to the hearing world?

Also something of particular interest to me is how these technological advances changed your society as a whole. Have any local Deaf Clubs shut down around you as technology has advanced? Have instant messengers, videophones, VRS, and pagers made it less necessary for you to utilize Deaf Clubs to communicate with others and share information?

I understand that this is a place for Deaf individuals to come together to share information or just chat, and I hope I haven't abused the purpose of this website. I'm just looking for some feedback from all of you, and would GREATLY appreciate anything that you had to add. Thanks so much!!
With love from Humboldt County,
Kelly:wave::wave:

Try looking at the tech section of AD. It's a treasure trove of information you can find in one place.

At least what you find from the tech section you might be able to collect an A+ from your professor ;)

doorbell lights: PIZZA!!!
flashing alarm clock: dont be late
smoke detectors: FIRE, walk safe and escape safe :]

well duh, im superdorky. Anyway.

those advance technologies has helped me a lot changes through the years which i am able to equal the hearing's capables of technologies use. It has changed in every Deaf's lives to be relieve and gives us a easier job to handle with instead of suffer. At this stand where we able to do those things to help us to exposure Hearings to understand our Deaf culture. We educate them everyday to recongize us that we can do anything but hear. That's simple. Our advantage to use our familiar communicate where we can do in our culture with others [Deaf families, friends and others] in non-culture shock. It will shock Hearing's culture to recongize that they are part of this world. Yes, we shook them up and tell them that we're capable of, not limit. we are very blessing to have those technologies that helping us through years to be worth it.

In our culture, communications is one of greatest keys for us to use. If not for technologies, we'll be feeling so limited and barriers on us from Hearing's oppression over us. Now, we empowering each other to stand up and strong to show them that we continue unity to grow at our beliefs on Deaf Culture. For us, we step up and not back down. We shall thank to people who create the technologies that gave us a opportunity to have. They deserve well credits.

You're have come to the right place, lady.

Better technology today has impacted lives and it has been a great journey and we are still fighting for more! I am actually from Australia and we do not have VRS, nor videophoones --- > Well, some of us do now, including myself ;) But still there is plenty of other technologies, such as hiptop - aka Sidekick in the US, it is popular in the aussie land now, of course. (not to you sherrie, if you are reading this :P) emails are the best tool, my friend.

thank you guys so much for all of your responses! It is so greatly appreciated!! I hope there are more to come.
I'm so glad that you all feel as if technology is really able to help you, and I too hope that there are many more advances coming your way.
One thing that really surprised me was that a flashing/strobe light smoke detector will cost nearly $300 US dollars! OH MY GOSH! maybe the next step should be towards making sure that these products are not only on the market, but are priced reasonably!

What an interesting question! I feel I have a very distinct opinion about technology.
I'm an older lady, early 70's, from Nebraska. About eight years ago the Deaf club in my town closed it's doors. People were no longer utilizing the resources available at the club and it began to be difficult for the club to maintain it's payroll. The volunteer list began to dwindle, and eventually they shut down all together. The young people didn’t need it, and well, us old people are just getting older.
I was forced to learn how to use a computer to communicate! How frustrating! I had never needed a computer before, and all the sudden it was one of our only means of conversation. communication is very important in the Deaf community, and so is interaction! We weren’t just going down to the club to have conversation any more. It all became inanimate, through a computer, or pager. I do feel as if the young Deaf people of our society are really missing out on the Deaf culture at its finest, or at least the one I grew up loving.
I'm not saying that I'm not grateful for all the advances or all the opportunities young Deaf people have available. I'm just saying that I think technology has really affected our community.

thank you for your time and interest!
