Late this morning, Hubby and I were working in our front yard. TCS noticed a couple of stray dogs trotting down our street to the right. I looked up, and told him, "Those are pit bulls. You better call Animal Control."

So, while he was calling them, I watched the dogs to see where they went. Suddenly a jogger passed by my house. I noticed that the dogs turned around and started chasing him, in front of my house again, this time towards the left. They continued around the corner to the next street. I heard a lot of barking but I couldn't see. So, I got in my Jeep and started looking. I didn't see the jogger (maybe he went inside the house), so I followed the dogs. They stayed either on the road or the sidewalk, together, so they were easy to spot.

They turned down a side road, then stopped at the beginning of a cul-de-sac. They froze for an instant then ran towards a house. I followed to see if maybe that was there home. Instead, I saw a man carrying his dog, running into the open garage, and into his house. The pit bulls followed him into his garage. When they ran off, I asked if he knew the owner. He said no but that they attacked his dog, and he was going to get his gun! Fortunately, he didn't need to do that.

I continued to follow the dogs back to the subdivision's main road. They had stopped in another front yard. A man in a pickup truck in front of me pulled over and slowly got out. He had a leash in his hand. I asked if they were his dogs. He said no but that those dogs had just killed his cat!

While we were talking, the dogs chased another cat across the front yard of a house where a couple were standing outside. Scary moment! I couldn't see if the cat got away.

After a long while, with those people working together, they were able to catch the male and put the leash on, and tie him to a sign post. The female dog strayed a bit but stayed in view of the male dog.

Back and forth, back and forth, they couldn't lure the female dog over. Still no Animal Control (after about an hour). Even though TCS told them that they weren't just stray but they were attacking pets and people.

Finally, TCS, asked another neighbor, an off-duty cop, for some help. He tried to call to expedite the Animal Control. Then, he got in his car to follow the female dog.

Animal Control finally showed up and took the male dog into the caged truck. They and the cop will continue to follow the female dog. They hope it will lead to the owner's residence.

As of 1:30 p.m., I saw the dog on our street again, walking past to the left, with the cop car and Animal Control truck following.

I hope they catch the dog soon. In about an hour, the school buses will start dropping kids off in the neighborhood. That could be bad.

I hear some barking outside. I'm going to take a look.

A similar incident happened here locally - however the pitbull had attacked a little boy and got away. It was never found.

The little boy had his jaw removed by the pitbull. Gruesome and scary.

Wouldn't a stun gun or a taser work for bringing down the female pit bull?....Those dogs sound vicious!...Hopefully the pit bull is caught before those kids get off the bus.

Pit Bulls are not allowed where I live. And my doggie, a Pomeranian has run of the yard. But I still keep a very close eye upon her.

nope. why? good luck aiming at it while it's charging at you with your adrenaline pumping high. and even if the dog got stunned, there's a 50-50 chance that it will bounce back angrier and maul you viciously.

shotgun is most effective for this.

Seems the cop and animal control were following it in their vehicles...I didn't mean to just run up to the dog and taser/stun it...just shoot it, even multiple times if necessary from a safe distance. Even a tranquiler should do the trick?

Awful!

lure the dog into a fenced yard, a shed or garage using food. so people and pets are safer. then let animal contral get the more confined animal.
One lady was trying to lure the female with a dog biscuit but the dog kept out of reach. The dog kept backing up, staying out of reach of anyone. She was very wary, and stayed out in the open, on sidewalks, roads, and front yards.

We're not allowed to discharge firearms here, unless to save a life; this is a residential area, with houses close together. One resident (whose dog was attacked) said he was about to get his gun but didn't have to because the dogs ran off (possibly because I drove up).

They're just following and watching. They weren't trying to capture it, at least not while I was there.

TCS knows the cop. I hope he gets info on what happened later. TCS won't be home again until late tonight.

you only have one shot. once you fire tazer/tranq gun... that's it. you'll have to have a nerve of steel to get'em done right. if you're a hunter, this would be piece of cake lol.

I wouldn't mess with them unless they were attacking a person. It was frightening enough to see them chase that poor cat, and that man rescuing his dog. One is bad enough but two (apparently mates) is worse. They might be more defensive of each other.

I'm not happy with the slow response by Animal Control, and by the fact that they didn't dispatch a deputy either. TCS told them that they weren't just stray dogs; they were pit bulls actually chasing and attacking people and pets. That's a more serious situation than a laid-back Lab wandering down the street.

I agree. And I'm terrified of Pit Bulls. Vicious or not, I know what they are capable of.

Unless the dog is a politician, I think a pole will work better than a poll. ;)

she was scared.

we have had to deal with feral or stray dogs a few times over the years. I have trapped one in a shed and another time in my parents garage. both times, using leftovers as bait. the animals were to scared to care about dog food or biscuts. the dogs did come running for meatloaf and grilled chicken.
