Yet another of my curiosity threads. I've been totally deaf for a few months now. That is to say, no technology in the world can offer me the ability to hear at this point. Since the last of my hearing slipped away into a fading memory, there has been no sound in my life, not even tinnitus. Prior to this, I've had tinnitus for several years, and it has been almost constant.
Just earlier today, I had an experience which I can only describe as physiologically impossible considering how my doctor described my hearing loss. It isn't actually a concern of mine as much as it is amusing to me. See, what happened today is I suddenly perceived a strange sound. The fact that I perceived sound at all is strange, but this was interesting to me since it didn't resemble tinnitus in any way. I heard a very distinct ghostly waling sound, such as those used in spooky movies involving the living dead. In the best audiological terms I know how to use, it was a single complex set of tones, each bending in pitch to produce e very clear audio representation of the call of a spirit of the dead as it is portrayed in science fiction movies. The sound was so real to me that it was hard to accept that it could have been just my imagination. However, the way I understand the nature of my hearing loss, there is no way the sound could be real or generated by any physical part of my ears. The sound seemed to originate from all around me. It was very spooky, but I was very amused by it, not frightened.
Has anybody had a similar experience? Has anybody any expertise or knowledge to share about this topic?

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come. I'll continue to post my experiences to this thread if I have any more. One thing I forgot to mention and was reminded of when you mentioned music is that at some times, I can hear a very faint almost to the point of inaudible sound of a distant trumpeter playing fast trumpet music. It doesn't sound like any particular sound, just practising fast parts and playing fancy fast classical music. When I was hearing, I never listened to a lot of trumpet music, so I don't know where this came from if it's all in my head. But it's interesting how the trumpet continues to play on pitch. Now that I have been talking about it, the trumpet has gotten stuck on a single unresolved note for several minutes. This is a slight bit more like tinnitus, but it's so faint that this trumpeter could easily be my imagination. But again, since I never listened to trumpet music, I don't know how it got in my head or why I'm imagining it now.
