FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin left open the option Thursday of waging war with Russia if it were to invade neighboring Georgia and the former Soviet republic were a NATO ally. "We will not repeat a Cold War," Palin said in her first television interview since becoming Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate two weeks ago.

Palin told Charles Gibson of ABC News that she'd favor including Georgia and Ukraine, both former Soviet republics, in NATO despite opposition by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."

"I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help," she said.

Pressed on the question, Palin responded: "What I think is that smaller democratic countries that are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against ... We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to."

She added: "It doesn't have to lead to war and it doesn't have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries."

Palin spoke the same day Putin insisted that Russia has no intention of encroaching on the sovereignty of Georgia, following a brief war that left Russian troops in firm control of two breakaway regions. Putin also aggressively defended the decision to send troops to Georgia, saying Russia had to act after Georgia attacked South Ossetia last month.

On other matters, Palin said she "didn't hesitate" when McCain asked her to be his running mate, a surprise selection that shook up the presidential race.

"I answered him 'yes' because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate," said the 44-year-old Palin, who has been in office less than two years.

Questioned about whether she felt ready to step in as vice president or perhaps even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain, Palin said: "I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready."

Gibson also read Palin a comment she made in her former church — "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God" — and asked whether she thought the United States was fighting a holy war.

Palin said she was recalling Abraham Lincoln's words when she made the comment and said: "I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words."

She said she didn't know if her son Track who is headed to Iraq was on a mission from God.

"What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer," Palin said.

She must be crazy, and please don't vote for McCain/Palin.

I have to agree that she doesn't know what to do. I can't believe that they're talking about a war with Russia? Saying two different things about God in this war? No, something doesn't match.

So many contradictions. Yes, no, maybe, it is it isn't, its okay for me to say it but don't you say it. She can't even handle herself in an interview without contradicting herself.

*scratch my head* at Sarah Palin

No way to have other war, that enough, war with Russia would be BIGGEST time for USA and we are probably can't pass it, even Georgia isn't my country to take care.

It's just shoddy journalism. Here's what she actually said:

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

In other words, she's saying "let's pray that our leaders follow God's plan." With that context, her quote about Lincoln makes sense. What the AP did was take out the bolded clause and report it as if it were it's own sentence. When you report just part of a sentence, you're supposed to use three dots (i.e. "... our national leaders...") and not use that to change the meaning. It's a particularly egregious example of biased reporting. As if that's not bad enough, this is the second time they've done that with this story. Here's the first time: Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God' - Yahoo! News

Here's the transcript for the interview with Charlie Gibson where she explains her comments: ABC News: EXCERPTS: Charlie Gibson Interviews Sarah Palin

Why would one need to explain their comments if they stated it concisely in the first place? Trying to mitigate the damage done, it would appear.

What make different if there are always more wars going on and send more troops to anywhere.

Fact, Obama want pull troops out from Iraq and move to Afghanistan.

Not all troopers will be transfer to Afghan, many of troopers who had sent to Iraq would be withdraw and go to home, have more time with their family, I'm support him to withdraw of Iraq war because Iraq does nothing to cause any conflict with US, I do understand about Afghan war is decent reason due 9/11.

War with Russia would make MORE WORSE, MUCH WORSE than war in Iraq or Iran, Russia has nuclear weapon then we must know better.

Yes, she did state it concisely in the first place, but the media totally twisted the meaning. Charlie Gibson asked her a question about it and she answered. Her answer only confirmed what those of us who looked up the whole quote already knew. However, those that only heard the twisted AP version needed clarification.

I´m not surprised after read that article that´s why Europeans hope that Obama win at election. We know that McCain support war, not troops. Palin...

Yes, that´s right and agree with your post here. Obama plan to pull troops in Iraq out within 16 months and will go home to their families, not transfer to Afghan. straight way yet.

Why Iraq for?

EU Government are working to make peace with Russia... I hope Palin/McCain won´t damage it... I will blame McCain/Palin if Russia affect European countries...

Said the Russian-born fellow. El Stupido!

Seriously, folks, we do NOT want to adhere to Russian interests (or re-invite INFLATION for the Russian industry). FOOL.

Steady growth of economy . . . something that is more rational than nationalism (something that "authentic" would want you to deny so that a few can benefit and a greater few can die).

CLARIFICATION: Over-expansion will kill the all-ready dead Russian currency. "Authentic" encourages you to go beyond a DEAD currency to achieve a greater DEAD currency.

Huh? If Russia affects the European countries, blame RUSSIA!

Of course, Germany has to  to Russia because they need the oil.

Sound like you want US president to leave Russia alone? Aren't they suppose being cooperate?

No, EU Government working on peaceful, not war with Russia. Accord the article, IF Palin/McCain ignore the peacemakers then blame AMERICA.

Of course, Germany has to  to Russia because they need the oil.

Okay, you ask for it...

Look, Bush send troops to death for attack Iraq because of oil but EU doesn´t but solve to peaceful. They work hard to make peace with Russia, not attack to make a war with them over oil like US did to Iraq.

Which you prefer to make a peace or start a war?

FYI: I do not defend Russia but see the fact on both sides. We including Russia knows the problem between Georgia and South Ossetia for years. Russia warned Georgia for long year to leave South Ossetia alone.

Unfortunlately Georgia started to attack South Ossetia to kill over 1,600 people before Russia attacked Georgia. Yes I would agree that Russia did too far but I have to accept on both sides between Russia and Georgia and have to say that Georgia start it in first place.

EU and US should step out to leave Russia alone to deal with Georgia and South Ossetia like what Russia leave US alone to deal with Iraq, Iran, etc... Russia did not involve anything when US decided to attack Iraq, don´t they?

It´s really sad that EU and US Government ignore it.

Hope that Palin remembers if we go to war with Russia--her state would be attacked first!
