OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Daisy Murphy celebrates her 109th birthday Tuesday at the Colonial Inn assisted-living home in Olympia.

She's too modest to offer advice, but her 73-year-old son, Don Murphy of Olympia, says her long life is attributed to a positive attitude, a lifelong love of learning and a healthy lifestyle.

Born in 1899, Daisy Murphy grew up in Scappoose, Ore., and earned a teaching certificate from what is now Western Oregon University. She and her husband and three children moved to Olympia just before World War II.

Murphy has voted in every election since women got the right to vote. She keeps up on current events with the help of caregivers who read the newspaper to her.

Imagine all the changes she has seen in her lifetime. Going from no electric to having electricity. Probably going from outhouse to indoor plumbing. Wow!
 
That's cool; too bad she's too shy or whatever to relate some of her life's adventures....
 
that must be strange to have a 73 year old son. and 50-something grandchildren. and 30-something great grandchildren. and great-great granchildren in their tweens.

alternative? you mean death?

i would rather die young than live for decades and decades in a broken down body.
 
I hope I still live up to 300 years old with same my current look. I just hope to live to see the colony on Moon.

you might be able to live to 200. but you'll have to have every organ in your body replaced and will likely be a blind, braindead vegetable for the last 90 or so years of your life.

Yeah... and I like the approach she has... a positive outlook. :)
 
I think it's cool with a positive approach she has and also we can learn something from the older generation and pass it down to the younger generation. :)
 
when i'm in a retirement home, staring at a white wall and filling out crossword puzzles for 16 hours a day and i need assistance to pee and walk more than 5 feet, i'll be sure to let you know if my mind has changed.
 
Lol, some of you are funny about the age thing. We gotta wait and see how it feels to be old, so we can see for ourselves. Also, technology with medical has been advancing so we could possible live longer.

Even though, that woman is 109 years old thru soo many dangers that could have been prevented by today. Those dangers would be the child proof devices, car safety, diseases, etc.

no need to know until I see someone pass 122 years old mark.
 
Interesting...it seems to me that more and more and MORE people are living up to more than 100 years of life. My great grandmother died at age 95 as my other great GREAT grandmother died at around 90 years of age as well but they were still close to 100. I've noticed that women in my family lived longer than men do. My grandfather died at age 76 due to cancer and my grandmother is almost 84 years old, still alive and kicking.

Obviously Most women live longer than men do so I guess it sucks that I'm a man too and I proably wont even reach age 90...who knows lol.
 
Wow, that is pretty long journey for her to contiune to living the life. Lucky her, I never wanted to end my journey and rest of it, eh creepy. I rather living last longer or forever ha

Im hoping I'll be able to ride the spaceship such future advance technology life! lol
