I called the department of rehabilitation for some help and guidance on getting new hearing aids or at least these ones repaired and you know what they say? Sorry can't help you, you have to be working full time. I am thinking what the hell? I am raising a kid, and I can't work if I can't hear right???? I'm aggravated. I thought they were there to help? Anyways, I need working hearing aids to hear my daughter, to be a parent. Im just venting, anyone else want to add to this vent? Its like people don't get that being a parent is not a job, and being one that has a disability can be a little more challenging at times. aasrrrrrgggeeeee someone hand me a stress ball to squeezeeee or a Halo Reach game to play!

How frustrating is that! Is there another service in the area who can help? Maybe a different organization?

just gotta say right words in order to get it. many VRS have limited budget so they have to prioritize. in your case - the way you say it... it's not considered as urgent priority.

try again and try to appeal.

Appeal again and keep on doing it.

Also try and contact the Rotary and Lion clubs, they sometimes donate HAs.

Right. They need to know that her ultimate goal is to return to work. That is what VR is there for. To get people with any kind of disability the accommodations they need to get back in the workforce.

Parenting is most definately a full time job...but it is not considered to be a part of the workforce.

Wow... I wasn't aware that deaf can't work. All this time, I grew up thinking that deaf just can't hear.

I understand feeling more secure if you can hear your daughter. But, do you really think you NEED to hear to be a good mother? There's lots of deaf parents that have too severe of a hearing loss to benefit from hearing aids or a CI. Their inability to hear their children has no reflection on their ability to parent.

So, if someone is using VR benefits without the intent of entering the workforce, would that be considered a form of fraud? Or perhaps stealing?

I agree with jilio. Parenting is a full time job. But, it's also one that we choose.

So, wait, you want taxpayers to pay for you to get hearing aids so that you don't go back to work and don't pay it back with your own taxes, which is the whole point of VR?

That makes total sense! Sure, have my hard earned money. No, no, no need to pay it back so that other people can benefit from VR. It isn't like you could have planned ahead for this child and actually saved the money you require to voluntarily reproduce, or anything. And it certainly isn't like you can parent without hearing.

*rolls eyes*

At least someone else feels the same....

Umm, why would you need a HA since there has crying baby alerting equipment for the Deaf parents? I have many Deaf friends who have deaf/hearing babies and they don't wear a HA or don't have one. They use baby alerting equipment such as flashing.

I am not sure... how to feel about this..

There are countless successful deaf parents...

Well said!....Profound deaf here, with 3 teenagers. And at times, I'm thankful that I can't hear all that goes on! But I rule the roost and they know it.

But since she/he can hear with a hearing aid, I can understand wanting a new one or getting the old one fixed. Since it's the Holidays, why not ask family members to help with the cost, instead of receiving gifts? Surely, there are some organizations that can help also....good luck!

To the bolded: absolutely.

Mass Rehab will only help pay for a HA if you're working or going to college. They helped me get hearing aid when I was working as health aid.
