Agent Orange, anybody?
Agent Orange was a chemical defoliant used to clear jungle canopy to allow us to see the enemy. It was never a weapon.
Because of incomplete hazard testing before use (In 1966 the State Department had issued a report that herbicides used in Vietnam are non-toxic and not dangerous to man or animal life).
Many nations troops came down with cancer and died early. Their kids had birth defects.
The Admiral who authorized its use was Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Jr. His son LT Elmo Zumwalt III died of NPDL (Nodular Poorly Differentiated Lymphoma) from exposure to it and, his son developed learning disabilities.
A few of my friends in the PGR still get tested twice a year at the VA for cancer from AO exposure. Fortunately, during Vietnam I was on an East coast destroyer and only sailed the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
