NEW YORK — Even the homeless can't escape the high price of a night in New York City.

City officials this month began charging rent to some families staying in homeless shelters.

The policy applies only to shelter residents who have income from jobs.

They could be expected to pay up to half their earnings.

Some shelter residents say the new rule will ruin their chances of saving enough money to get an apartment.

One single mother living in a Manhattan shelter tells The New York Times she got a letter saying she had to give up $336 of the $800 she makes each month as a cashier.

The city says it is only charging people who can afford to pay.

About 2,000 families are expected to be covered by the new rule.

Oh, not surprised.

$336 is just similar price to rent the mobile home in here, also car is required to drive.

Sad to say.. Their are a lot of section 8 housings for people. I know of a couple that lives in my town only pays 60 dollars a month on RENT. In a government apartment complex.

These apartments are real nice.

As for homeless people, Some of them do milk the system. and some of them really are there to seek help, until they get off their feet. I think the "rent rates" should not apply until they over welcomed their stay.

I feel they should comply with the system in order to be able to stay free. and get back on their feet. Some just are content in staying in shelters. and keeps coming back. Those are the ones that needs to be charged a rate based on income.

:gpost: excellent idea

Taking half of their income doesn't do much to help them save to become self sufficient.

I like to know why are they staying there to save money? I do understand that they need to make sure they have enough to make a down payment plus rent.. and that they need to find the right place first but Are they trying to buy a house? I don't think it is that hard to get an apartment, although , I do know a guy who took drugs and been in jail for it and since then, apartment landlords would not let him rent. So he have been staying at motels and with my dad since. I suppose a person like him do need a place of his own since apartments can not take drug addicts for the safety of children.

Anyway, it is up to the shelter to charge them or not.. as long as they charge them as little as possible.. These people need time to get back on their feet although I think the longer they stay, the higher they should charge them if they have a job.

oh btw, Housing 8 is not easy to get as you think

Many people loose their jobs and become homeless. The fastest growing homeless population is families with children. Families become homeless because they can no longer pay their rent or their mortgage.

Finding and securing an apt in NYC, no doubt, is like every where else. If they find an apt., they are expected to pay a security deposit (often the same as a month's rent), and the first and last month's rent. That can add up to several thousand dollars. Takes awhile to save that up, especially if you are working for minimum wage, and are also paying for a family's clothing, food, and other expenses at the same time.

I agree, I do think shelter need to give them alittle time to save at least $2,500 or whatever the cost of living and apartments is (a decent and easy to find apartment where I live is about 600-800 a month). If you live in a shelter, they do provide food, clothing, , and expenses for you. So that's should not be concern, although I think they need to consider health expenses to give them even more time to save.
After that, they should charge them as minimum as possible (maybe like $30 a month instead of free). and keep raising just little. they have to look after the shelter and other family. They need to make room for new family who lost their jobs. they can not afford to build a bigger shelter.

NYC isn't cheap place to live, it's impossible to find any apartments that offers $500-$700, except if you want live in old, crappy, rat infested and rotten in Brooklyn or Bronx.

Oh, yup, that's right.

What about single people or married couple with no children, they are less chance to be homeless than families with children?

My friend has a tiny tiny 600 square foot apt in NYC...the rent is $1,500 something like that! Crazy!

Yup, it's ridiculously expensive and much worse than LA and bay area.

I"m glad that I don't live in NYC for many reason.

I *shake my head sadly* reading the article and thought about octomom who have 14 children few months ago. She received everything to compare with single mother who earns $800 per month thru work hard. It´s sad that a single mother work hard to make sure that she won´t become homeless to compare with octomom who don´t need to work hard but just receive money from taxpayers to comfort her life with nannies...

Excuse me for my whines...

that's why I wrote later whatever a decent apartment cost. Around here, it cost 600 to 800

I am sure that in NYC, they get paid higher than the pay where I live. Cost of living is different. My sister get paid alot higher than my husband in D.C. but the reality is that it is same as my husband. the rent where she lives is higher.

I'm not going to worry about her.

If you work at minimum wage then wouldn't be any difference.

If any families who make $50,000 per year in NYC and they are treat like more low income because cost of living is already far exceed to make comfortable and tax system is high too.

You can ask Jiro because he already explain in other thread.

If NYC is like that, I would say get out of there. No one need to put up with that.

just a question, why is the ghetto so bad? I mean everyone there is human. i never understood why people crave to live in the High class neighborhood.. why can't the low class consider themselves high class (you know, be contented where they live)? Maybe the neighbor is just bad because people made them feel that way.

but then again, I guess the cost is so high that it is hard to afford to fix up horrible apartments ... so I still think they need to leave the city until they get it straightened out

I don't want to live in ghetto in inner city or inner suburb for many reason, I rather to live in place that's normal and clean with many retail store and food service to access, also safe has been part of my factor.

I'm not urban man, remember.
