ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Well, that's quite the irony... and quite unfortunate too.

Darwin's Law at work again. What a way to take yourself out of the gene pool.

A childhood friend of mine died the day after college graduation; she hit a pothole on her bike (regular bike, not a motorcycle), lost control of the bike, fell, hit her head on the curb, died shortly thereafter. Heartbreaking for her mom and family, and for all of her friends who cared about her.

This was back before helmets were widely used, much less required. Since those days, it's become conventional wisdom that helmets save lives. Pity some people didn't get the memo on that.

I havent. Still ride my bicycle in busy streets.

Here in Florida, helmets are not required But when ur driving an automobile/truck, etc....sealts belts are!.....Go Figure!

A relative of ours noted he was gonna buy a motorcycle, sans the helmet.....saying he didn't need one......Guess I need to check into some life insurance on this guy.....And with the 4th of July approaching...more and more bikers are gonna be riding w/out helmets.

Yes, A Subaru Outback was going the wrong way on the interstate and crashed head-on into the motorcycle. Kenneth Stith, 54, of Akron OH near Cleveland last Friday, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

Helmets are not required in state of Ohio. Should wear helmet. Ohio is stupid without helmet law.

Without a helmet? Ah, please don't that!

You and I may not see eye-to-eye on everything, but I'd hate to come in here to read your obit one of these days!

Yeah. I agree. Our heads are just like melons. Easy to break, and the squishy inside comes out. Even former president Bush and other dirt bike riders wear their helmets, too. And also, more and more skiers are wearing helmets as well I've noticed lately, too. But riding a motorcycle people should have the obvious common sense to wear a helmet. Our heads are no match when it comes to gravity, speed, and the ground.

I never head out on my bike without a helmet. I also just ordered a reflector vest. I thought they were silly until I started riding my bike in DC and noticed that I'm in the minority without one. I'm the one who looks silly.

Wirelessly posted (sent from a smartphone. )

I would rarher wear helmet when riding a bicycle as well. These people who don't wear helmets are idiots, mostly adults.

Medical professionals in the ER have a term for people who refuse to wear helmets--organ donor. Pleae wear a helmet to protect your brain! Mom tip #205

My kids do not wear helmets when riding their bikes. Never have at all. Daughter has fallen off her bike a lot, but so far has not hit her head. For a number of years, I did provide the helmet, but it was never used, so I decided not to spend the money. If they decode they want one now, then yes, I will buy it for them.

I do know that here in FL motorcycles do not require helmets and I think it is totally asinine. But then, I have never been on a motorcycle and I think I am too afraid to try.

Texas doesn't require helmets either.

if supposed forbidden on law is very strictest because important strong law
