Police: Nurse, 51, kills intruder with bare hands

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size -- 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds -- may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911.

"You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

I dont know what the Laws are in oregon.But in Maryland The police would arrest you even its self defense.Cause maryland have very liberal laws designed by liberal democrats.But in Florida its Leagal.
 
Yipes. And, that, children, is why you don't want to provoke the nurse.
 
That nurse did a good job of defending herself. The key here when choking somebody and I mean, only in self defense is to watch the intruder's arms so he does not suddenly pull out a gun or a knife because some intruders may have put their gun or knife away to focus on breaking into the house only to be surprised by you, the homeowner then you and him are in a life and a death struggle, even if he does not have a gun or a knife or a hammer etc. You still need to watch his arms and the best way to do that is pin your knees on his arms and lift his neck up then put your weight down towards the arms, not the chest or the stomach although you can do that if you have disabled his arms through broken arms and blood is gushing out at the elbows then you can sit back on his chest or stomach and choke him. I know it is gruesome but any criminal attack is always going to be very gruesome, nasty and vicious, extremely violent. The best thing you can do if you live at home alone and you do have no kids is to leave the house really fast and let the intruder steal things from your home and if he goes after you, make sure to go to the house where you know for sure that person comes home from work everynight or is home every night so there is no wasted movement and you may have to ultilize hit and run tactics such as running then stopping to hide and pick up rocks to throw and injure his head because he is after you with a gun , knife or a hammer etc and remember his bare hands also can kill too. If you have kids at home and he is breaking in, if you have time get the kids out of the window and fight him off. Really, intruders have absoutely no business breaking into anybody's home wheter the homeowner is a male or a female. Nobody likes to think about intruders in their homes but it does pay to think about these things once in awhile and update yourselves mentally and physically how you would handle a situation like that then say a prayer that it never will happen. Good job with the nurse and she was extremely lucky. Sometimes a person's weight does not matter, it is the know how that matters. Just take a look at judo, body leverage, karate there is the hand blow then in boxing the punches, the various holds and a matter of knowing the vital points on the human anatomy chart etc so don't depend on the weight alone to win the fight in self defense against an intruder. It is bad enough when it happens but it is always good to put the intruder in a world of hurt and in the hospital because then you are safe and if he dies then it will be a consquensce of his illegal actions of breaking into the home and doing these evil things. In situations like these, it is a fight for keeps, a kill or be killed situation.
 
My god, what courage!!

Yeah, as everyone else says, I gotta be extra nice to the nurses, even if they come with injections with flu vaccinations!!
