Not feeling well at the moment

ah, good, you okay :D

yeah, I recall the Summer of '95 or '96, I was still living with my folks. We had one small window conditioner. I was very glad of it because of my allergies and asthma too. I have been outside with the guys several times today.
But when I was a kid we didn't have air conditioning in the house at all. I remember it would get pretty hot. My dad does well w/heat; my mom not quite so much but not much difficulty and overall the heat doesn't bother me me much. We were in Dallas one Summer - mom and I- many many years back during JULY....whew!
But my new job as part-time doggie daycare handler involves being outside during the hottest part of the day as I work in afternoon, corresponds with my being at same facility for dog TRAINING later that eve., as opposed to me going back and forth, especially with husband with no job. I wasn't there today but on Monday we had the dogs inside where there is air conditioning, but the dogs don't do as well because there is less space. It's also harder to clean, especially if there has been a lot of humidity. I imagine the dogs were inside today too..

Shel, I hope you and your husband feel better soon! On one hand you can commiserate together........on the other hand with both of you ill then it may be harder to get things done in general in house and it may be more difficult for one partner to care for the other one! :aw:

When we first bought this <1950 built> house it came with old-style "water-based" AC, one of those which sat on the floor, had something to do with water - water would come from the basement sink and it did this vibrating thing when it turned on. A few years after I understood it became illegal for new properties to have this kinda system. And then it quit and we got modern central AC in because of my allergies and at that time we had a medically-compromised dog who needed accommodations.

dogmom,

Central A/C must be nice! I wish I had that! :) (I also wish I had wood floors!)

dogmom and Shel,

Now that I'm diagnosed with asthma, I am concerned about how extreme heat will affect my asthma. I plan to move to Arizona within the next 2 months.

Shel, do you have any comments about this since you used to live in Arizona? My asthma is only mild, but my GP still told me to be careful in the heat.

By the way, I will be moving to Tucson.

That is strange... I personally knew two persons who moved to Arizona because of their asthma. It sounds like you are saying that the heat could trigger asthma attack.

Are you able to come to AZ for a vacation? You could use that to see how the heat affect your asthma and hunting for apt at the same time. Today, I could feel the heat wind blowing about me in the carport. Interesting!

The reason I mentioned the heat is because heat can create smog which in turn can make it difficult for asthmatics and those with bronchitis to breathe. Heat in general can also do this without there being an external cause.

Here is more information:

Hot, humid air thought to trigger asthma attacks

I spent over a week in Tucson before, so I'm familiar with their climate.

Here in Wisconsin we have heat advisories issued during the summer and anyone with breathing problems are encouraged to stay indoors where they can be in an air conditioned environment.

How did you feel in Tucson then?

I was there in December when temperatures were in the 70s so I didn't have any problems at all. My concern is when temperatures reach the triple digits during the summer.

I've also been to Tulsa, Oklahoma in triple degree heat and I do remember having alot of trouble breathing. The heat made me feel like I couldn't catch my breath because every time I inhaled, it felt like the air was being sucked out of me.

I wish someone on AD who lives in a hot climate and has asthma could comment.

By the way, when temperatures reach the 90s here in Wisconsin in mid July and the humidity is over 90%, I have a very difficult time breathing. My asthma may be mild, but remember that I also have allergies to pollen, ragweed, scents/perfumes and smoke (cigarette/pipe/cigar) which can also be found in the environment and make things worse.

I know the feeling. it was awful.... just.. awful.... that dastardly heat wave. Every step you makes.... it feels like you're a coal miner.

Exactly. Add to that being unable to breathe and you feel like you're dying -- literally.

Now I have a better appreciation for what my nephew went through during his childhood. He had severe asthma and I'll never forget hearing him wheeze and cough nonstop. I'm lucky though that mine is mild, but as my GP said, what complicates my asthma are allergies.

Sorry, I don't have asthma so I can't comment. AC is a must when you are hunting for an apt. Good luck in that.

I already have 6 apartments in mind all in the same neighborhood. I know several people who live in Tucson and 3 of them live in the neighborhood I'm considering. They all told me it's a very nice area. I've also visited the neighborhood and was impressed with what I saw.

Since Arizona does not have humidity like Wisconsin does, this is why I'm curious to know how or if the heat can affect me.
