The Marlborough Express: local, national & world news from Marlborough's daily newspaper

Flo is a dog with no bark and no future if no one gives her a home.

She was found six weeks ago by a Marlborough District Council animal control officer investigating a complaint of barking. She was found crammed in a cage with her sibling and another dog.

Safe to say the barking culprit was not Flo, as the four- or five-month-old mixed breed is deaf.

Now dog control hopes this final plea for a home does not fall on deaf ears.

"We've exhausted all options," Animal Control officer Jason McMillan said. "She's already been out at the SPCA. Someone adopted her but when they found she was deaf they took her back, unfortunately."

She was checked out by a vet, who discovered she was deaf.

Flo was sent back to council dog control on Monday where she sometimes plays with duty-dog Mate, oblivious to the barking from the other inmates.

At a guess, her bloodline stretches between collie, labrador, terrier and possibly dalmatian, given the flecks on her body. The one black and one white ears give her a slightly comic look and her nature appears gentle and inquisitive.

"She might be no good at letting you know someone's coming, but there's no reason she couldn't learn hand signals," Mr McMillan said. He agreed that any new owner would be a special sort of person.

Wow! I hope someone will adopt that dog real soon! It sounds interesting, I wonder if there are pics of her.

I wish there is something I could adopt this dog. I don't even care if dog is hearing or deaf, it's important to accept for who dog is. I'd like to welcome this dog comes to deaf world.

I would take her if I could,this is a sad story :(

I think she is in New Zealand. Isn't Grummer there and a big animal lover?

Aww... out of the country?

If it was here in this state, I wouldn't mind adopting it. :)

Deaf dog finds new home

Flo is a dog with no hearing, but she does now have a home.

After being featured in an article in The Marlborough Express last week Flo the four or five-month-old deaf mixed breed has been adopted by a Blenheim girl and her family.

Natalie Wye, 15, saw the story about Flo and was able to convince her parents to adopt the puppy.

"I have wanted a dog ever since I was about eight, and she was cute. I felt sorry for her," Natalie said.

She thought Flo's deafness would be a good challenge.

Dalmatians and white dogs are apparently prone to deafness, and Flo is perhaps a mixture of collie, labrador, dalmatian and bull terrier.

Training Flo with hand signals, Natalie has taught Flo to sit, lie down and come. Heel and not barking are the next training tasks.

Calling Flo from a distance is not a problem, Natalie says. "She doesn't like to be away from me, so she just always comes and stays around me."

When Natalie first brought Flo home she was a bit sad and whined a lot.

She is sometimes startled when she gets a fright.

But she is now a lot happier and likes to play with other dogs. Flo doesn't hear other dogs growling, but can bark herself when she wants attention.

Natalie said she was reading a lot about how to train deaf dogs, and there was a reasonable amount of information on the internet.

Flo was found about seven weeks ago by a Marlborough District Council animal control officer investigating a complaint of barking.

She was found crammed in a cage with her sibling and another dog.

Animal control officer Jason McMillan said last week that the barking culprit was not Flo owing to her deafness.

Flo had already been adopted from the SPCA but returned when the owner found out she was deaf, Mr McMillan said.

After the article appeared animal control received several calls from people wanting to adopt Flo, he said.

"We were really impressed with the response," he said.

"It's just great to have found her a home, we're just really happy."

Aww, I'm happy to read someone adopted a deaf dog Flo. If I was still in NZ I wouldn't mind to adopting it. :)

Ahh... Cute!!

Anyone who're deaf can have a deaf dog, but surely, anybody who can take care of dogs can have a deaf dog, but as long as the dog owner can find information about training deaf dogs in the Internet! :) :giggle:

(Size 1 represents a quieter voice than normal.)

I'm just being an open-minded person... :)
