House Painted Bright Green, Surrounded By Pink Flamingos

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- A neon-colored home stands out in a neighborhood in Ponte Vedra Beach, receiving mixed reactions from neighbors.

Austin Kuo's home is painted bright green and pink, and the yard is thoroughly decorated by dozens of pink flamingos.

"A lot of people come by and say, 'I love your flamingos,'" Kuo said.

Not everyone, however, is pleased by his decorations. Kuo said he originally just wanted to paint his house green. When he received complaints in the neighborhood, out came the pink in the form of trim and flamingos.

"This is like a protest. She can't tell me how to paint my house," he said.

He said people who opposed his idea are considering founding a homeowners' association. The neighborhood Kuo lives in is one of the few neighborhoods in Ponte Vedra that does not have one.

For now, Kuo said all the pink and green is not going anywhere.

I've seen one house painted with Neon Orange (construction orange) color in Kansas City, KS (old neighborhood area). One house in Kansas City, Missouri painted with Iridescent Purple (deep neon purple). I couldn't understand why owner wanted the house painted like that. One of my former neighbor painted his house in Cobalt Blue. It was close enough to be a Neon Blue. !!!

Owners probably trying to get everyone attention

Usually bright house colors are more accepted in beach communities and Florida locations like Miami and Key West. In South Carolina, beach front houses are usually more colorful.

I saw the video. Oh, my, the other houses in that neighborhood all looked like shades of gray! "Gray" doesn't say "Florida" to me (I've lived in Pensacola and Key West). I think the whole neighborhood could use MORE color.

I have my own issues with home owners' associations, so maybe I'm biased. :)

Ponte Vedra Beach is a much exclusive neighborhood. Hosts the TPC....in my opinion, houses like this are more of a "nuisance" to look at, and yeah, think the owner just wants "attention".....No way would I want to live next door to a house like this, if I'm paying millions for property in Ponte Vedra Beach!

I saw the houses on the news video. The ones in that neighborhood didn't look like they were worth millions of dollars, nor did they look "exclusive". They all looked like tract homes, with very little variety. In fact, if that neighborhood was "exclusive" it would have already had an HOA in existence.

They are usually governed by control freaks.
Could be.

Recently, we received two "courtesy" letters for our "violations of the covenant" in our front yard. During this same period, our front yard was nominated for yard of the month! Go figure!

I think the neon house looks real beautiful. I love anything with neon colors. Blame it on my being born and growing up in the 1980s. :D

And what were these "violations"?

I hate HOAs.

I once lived in a purple house, when I was a child. With huge front and back yards, each being half a football field in size. I had my bedroom painted pink. :D

I also lived in a very big blue victorian-type house as a teenager, this was one of the foster homes I have lived in. No one ever complained about the house or the stuff in the yards, cuz my then-foster mom would put all kinds of stuff in her front yard and do a lot of wildflower gardening (not neat trim flowers, just country wildflowers instead) and no one ever complained. There were toys everywhere, and a huge trampoline in the backyard as well as a playhouse. :D

I can't stand control freaks.

When I buy my own house I will paint it the colors I want. I may paint it in neon colors because it's MINE. And it will be in an non-HOA neighborhood. HOAs whine about everything on your house, your back and front yards, your driveways, and even your cars. And if people whine about my house, I will tell them to fuck off because I PAID for the house, they didn't. Therefore I get to do what I want with MY house.

I think HOAs exist because some people like being anal tightwads.

I agree with you! I can't imagine living in a boring colorless neighborhood with houses that looks like they were cloned, and all looking exactly the same.

They both related to my Jeep. One was my "Jeep Parking Only--All Others Will Be Crushed" sign. The other was for parking my Jeep on an area other than our driveway.

To me the neighborhood looked clean but run down.

But hey, this is America. If you don't have the right to tell your neighbor what to do and how to act -- What rights do you have?

Jeez. I see nothing wrong with both "violations"...I wouldn't consider them violations anyway. HOA must be a pain in the butt for you! I would think they have nothing better to do than go driving around your neighborhood looking for really lame "violations" to "fill their quotas" or whatever...they must be quite bored. Do they actually drive around and find violations or do they have neighbors call in to the HOA and complain about their neighbors?

And I like your Jeep Parking Only sign...that is funny. I want a Jeep when I can afford one.

The covenants say "no signs allowed except "For Sale" or "For Rent". I told them that mine isn't a real traffic sign--it's a whimsical lawn decoration that can't even be seen from the road when my Jeep is parked there. My Hubby gave that to me as a birthday gift. Other people have signs with ADT, their names, "Welcome Spring", "Go Greenwaves", "Beware of the Dog", etc., but for some reason mine is not allowed.

I used to park my Jeep on a special area made for it next to the paved driveway. It was oak mulch outlined with monkey grass. But the HOA said "no parking in the yard except on the driveway." I checked the covenants, and there is no description of what materials constitute a driveway. We submitted the proper paperwork for direction as to how we could bring my parking area into compliance by modifying it. It's been almost a month and we haven't heard a peep from them. In the meantime, many of my neighbors park one or two vehicles in their front yards, on the grass or dirt, and some park parallel with the road, straddling the grass easement and blocking the sidewalks.

I think someone must be jealous of my yard, or they don't like my Jeep. :dunno:

I had to move my Jeep or else be fined, get a summons to court, and have a lien put on the house. Bah!

Yes, they do drive around to look for violations. The day they wrote me up, I happened to notice the car parked out front while the driver was writing down something. Ironically, the one letter that proved my Jeep was "observed in violation" was the same date as the letter that proved my sign was "observed in violation." When my Jeep is parked in that position, you have to go way out of your way to see the sign. What a joke!

A few days after we got the letters, I noticed another car stopped out front. Hubby went out to ask them what they were doing. They were part of the committee that picks the Yard of the Month. They were judging the beauty of my yard for the contest (which we have won a few times before, without trying). :laugh2:

My Hubby volunteers his time and effort to maintain the lights and Flag at the subdivision front entrance. A couple times a year, we also trim back the thorny rose bushes and other plantings that block the landscape and Flag flights. No one else wants to do those things, and we don't mind to keep it looking nice (the hired landscape company won't do it), and keeping the Flag in respectable condition, properly lighted, raised and lowered when appropriate, and replaced when necessary.

Oh, well.

Did anybody notice this guy had about a hundred "pink flamingoes" in his yard? To make the neighbors more angry because of the color of his house? HAHA!....I dunno if all those homes were actually "grey colored"...my home was a blueish grey at one time, very pretty color....

I like to keep my yard neat and trash-free also....and at one time, residents living several houses down, had chickens, and they shyt all over my yard, even flying on the roof of my house....my dog & cat chased them all the time. There was no HOA there....and of course, I don't live there anymore!

The flamingos aren't permanent structures and can be easily removed--they are temporary decorations.

There's nothing wrong with gray or blueish-gray houses; it's just that there wasn't much variety in the colors on that street. It looks like a government housing project if all the houses are the same color.
