I will soon be receiving an ABI (auditory brainstem implant) and would like to hear(no pun intended) from other(s) who have received this as well. My doctors have not told me much about it, I would just like to know to expect.

Thanks

Just looked it up on Wiki. It appears to be a new procedure, and only a thousand or so people have it. Interesting device.

Never heard of it, so that might be why you are not getting any responses.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I'm sorry -- I don't know anybody with an ABI. But perhaps your hospital and the implant company can point you to some current users, an online group or forum? I chatted with many CI recipients when we were looking into it, was very useful.

This is pretty new, don't know anyone with ABI but it seem to be interesting and possibility better than CI?

Actually, the hearing with the ABI is supposed to be vastly inferior to a CI and is only done when a person is not a candidate for an implant.

Its getting done, I am not a candidate for a CI because the hearing organ will die during a surgery to remove a tumor off of it. The CI only works for living organs

:wave:Here's to wishing you success with your endeavors.. All I can suggest is to research and research some more and try to find others that have had this procedure done. It helped me to understand what I was getting myself into with getting the CI. I wish you the best of luck and please let us know how it goes for you.

I have a friend with an ABI. What do you want to know about it? I'm sure she'd chat with you if you wanted.

I hadn't seen this thread...thanks deafgal for showing it to me. A specialist mentioned it to me as he feels I might be a candidate.

That girl in the video does not look happy at all. I feel really bad for her.

Have you asked the dr about it , and they have not answered the questions ?If that is the case , I would think about seeing another dr.

Have you met the actual surgeon that would be performing the procedure ? You are about to allow someone to cut into your BRAIN. An hour meeting with the person that will be doing the actual cutting is something that I personally would require.

The procedure is so new , that I would expect any dr willing to perform it to be excited about the chance to perform another one that they would talk your ear off. ( pun intended :-D )

ABI info

Dear Tigersharkdude:

First off, I'm sorry to read you have NF2.

There are about 15 people on Facebook with ABI's: Ask Amber Duby, Rachael Morris, or Anne Shigley for friend suggestions for the others.

There are slightly over a thousand people worldwide with ABI's, with Brachmann at House Ear Institute in LA performing 260 as of June. Also, Dr Vito Colletti in Verona, Italy has performed ABI surgery not only for NF2, but also for a few deaf young children born without cochleas, with very good success.

Lastly, there is an excellent six-page 3-article sequence in HLAA's March-April Hearing Loss Magazine entitled Hearing with Our Brain: Karen’s Journey Back to the World of Sound. If you aren't a member of HLAA, ALDA, AG Bell or NAD, you should consider joining one (or more) of them.

I wish you good luck.
