Need help with motorcycle question

I purchased a motorcycle from a dealer several years back. It was the owners demo and had a few miles on it. He had also added some accessories which included aftermarket exaust pipes. Before I purchased the bike I asked the salesman if the carbs were re-jetted as they should be with aftermarket pipes and he told me they were. I come to find out later on that he lied. (go figure) Now that dealer is long since closed down and I need some way to identify the aftermarket pipes in order to get the correct jet kit for my bike.

I think they are cobra's but I am not positive. It was not listed on any of my original purchase paperwork.

Does anyone know of a way to identify the pipes or is there some method to determine the proper jet kit?

I appreciate your help.

thanks

Not enough information

BUT damn, cobra pipes are damn nice!

Not necessarily rejet with every aftermarket pipes. Some pipes does not need to be rejetted. That is why I said not enough information.

What additional information do you need? Not to disagree with you but any bike that I have had or any bike any of my friends have had that put aftermarket pipes needed to be rejetted. I am not saying every pipe needs rejetting however I have never heard of aftermarkets that you didn't need to rejet for and I have been riding for over 30 years.

Of course, sometimes does not need to rejetted *IF* the after market pipe is identical to OEM

Here is link Motorcycle Repair: rejetting carbs, kawasaki vulcan 800, aftermarket pipes
Thanks for the link Biker. Interesting read. I was always told if the pipes "blue" where they connect to the engine that is a sign of needing a rejetting. Obviously reading the plugs will tell as well but I didn't know there was a specific procedure to properly read the plugs. Also the advise about trying a bunch of different size jets and reading the plugs after each adjustment sounds expensive. The jet kits for my bike are sixty five bucks a pop.

Hmm pipe turning blue, near the manifold? Or the whole pipe? I have seen them turning blue sometimes. It can be overheating. I am not sure if it is normal or not. I gotta to look at my goldwing as I had it rejetted to accept regular unleaded gas because it used to accept leaded gas. We no longer see leaded gas so, I decided to go for it anyway.

Just near the manifold. The bike has pipe covers on it so I didn't notice it when I purchased the bike.

Yes it seems to ride fine. I am not getting the gas mileage I should be though which would indicate that it is running rich.

What kind bike and how many CC this bike got?

For me, I got 1200 cc and I normally yield 35mpg. There are times when I just crusing at 40mph I ended up hit 50mpg

Are all the dealers closed down or just that location?

If not all dealers are closed, just the local place... then contact their headquarters. Explain the situation and tell them that you have one of their motorcycle with a bad part that needs to be properly replaced.

Have you considered having it looked at by a local motorcycle mechanic or something?

There are others that are open but they are far away. I have re jetted carbs before and should be able to handle it if needed. That pipes themselves are not bad. It's just a question of if the carbs need re-jetting due to the bluing and also that I am not getting the same mileage as some of my buds that have the identical bike.

Unless I've missed something here along the way, why not replace the pipes to OEM specs rather than re-jet?

Because I like the after market pipes better. They are nice and loud. Also re-jetting would be cheaper and easier.

Perhaps, it's the pipes that causing the mileage problems?

Perhaps, it's something else?

Changes on pipe size does make difference on mileage, depending and it really varies.

I had mine re-jetted due to leaded gas no longer available in the USA.

Ok, I understand now, RD; I just didn't realize that to re-jet would be cheaper.
