Mystery missile fired off CA coast

Optical allusion. You're on the ground looking up and across the landscape. Four things are playing tricks on your eyes, the speed of the craft, the angle from where you are, the distance from you and the craft, and the elevation of the craft relative to yours. If you were to draw a line, say at 40,000 feet and draw it continously westward at the same elevation that line would begin to look like it'd be curving downward into the horizon. That's an optical illusion because that line at that elevation is following the curvature of the earth. But had the line stayed absolutely straight and not follow the Earth's curvature it'd be seen as gradually going up because elevation wise the line is rising higher and higher away from the Earth's surface.

Yes, seems very plausible and that optical illusion is well observed - it's easy to forget that optical illusion is a possibility. Kinda like driving in the desert and you think you see water on road.

don't ya'all love it when they come up with a very detailed explanation yet plausible in a very short time?

I still say it does not look anything like a plane vapor trail...... That's my 2 cents.

Go to Southern California, the same general area where the news spotted this missile. Find the next flight from Hawaii to Arizona whose flight path and time coincide with that of the mystery "missile" and hoping that you'd have good weather watch and observe. If not, have somebody you know go there and watch the same thing. In fact, I bet somebody on YouTube will record this and record the same contrail seen on the news when it was first reported. In fact, there is a picture of that same flight path taken yesterday with the contrail from a plane originating out of Hawaii to Phoenix.

have you seen it?

FoxNews.com - Blogger Believes Webcam Image Solves 'Missile' Mystery
"The Department of Defense, after gathering info over the last 36 hours from within the Department of Defense and other U.S. government agencies, is satisfied the contrail was likely caused by an aircraft."

But which flight? Todd Lehmacher, a spokesman for US Airways, could not confirm that Flight 808 was responsible for the vapor trail, though he did confirm details of the flight.

"Flight 808 did depart Honolulu at 9:53 a.m. yesterday morning local Honolulu time and arrived at Phoenix at 7:04 p.m.," Lehmacher told FoxNews.com, and the plane did travel along the planned route between those two destinations, he said. But that isn't conclusive evidence, Lehmacher stated.

"I can confirm that our aircraft traversed that route yesterday, but you'd need to talk to someone who's more versed in atmospheric conditions," Lehmacher said. Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the FAA, agreed with Lehmacher's diagnosis.

"We can't determine the exact source of the contrail because we don't know its location, trajectory or altitude," he told FoxNews.com. "Remember, we did a radar replay of an area based on MEDIA REPORTS of the location of the contrail, not on any precise location of the contrail."

After reviewing the video, I am sure it was rocket powered. Maybe a target drone that was launched (by accident?)

If the press asked if it was a plane, the military or white house would say we don't know because NORAD or DHS were caught off guard.

If the press asked if it was a missile, the military could say no because it was technically a rocket.

When I was in the Navy, every ship and submarine had to launch an inert missile for personnel training/qualification and equipment certification. Each type of vessel had different weapons systems for different missions. We use drones for surface to air attacks, floating/towed targets for surface action.

Finally, training includes going though all the steps to a launch without pushing the "button". Maybe someone inadvertently took the final step. People have been known to ignore proper procedures. That is why we have so many incidents. Just my 2 cents worth

:ty: for your insight, TCS. I did read a report somewhere that it is possible it's part of missile defense system with laser since it's where Point Mugu's Naval Air Warfare Center-Weapons Division Sea Range is.

I wouldn't be surprised if that contrail was caused by a modified-747 equipped with laser. Conspiracy Theory? maybe... something went wrong and the plane was leaking a massive amount of gaseous substance which is used for cooling/powering laser system :dunno:

ain't this fun to come up with dozens of conspiracy theories?

To me 2 problems. The trail appears too wide and too dense at the point of origin. and The disruption in the trail looks more like that of a burst rather than disintegration by wind. Usually a trail maintains it shape (although it does become wider and less dense) until after the aircraft is out of view. I very well could be wrong but my guess is still missile or rocket.... With what I think is a burst I am thinking rocket. Dunno though......doubt we will ever know.

kinda remind you of Challenger explosion, eh?

I think Gilligan and the Professor are headed to the moon. BTW I saw in the paper the Professor turned 86 today.....didn't realize he was still alive

Alot actually.....I was thinking that earlier.

I just added a video. It was a "new video" that just surfaced 24 years later after the explosion. interesting...

:ty: Cool post.....I missed it earlier bc it caught the bottom of page 3

The most troubling issue to me is the fact that our government looks either clueless or deceptive in its response. Whether it's a plane, missile, or swamp gas, the government and our security looks totally lame in the way it's handling things.
