Missile Shot Off Los Angeles Still a Mystery for Pentagon Officials

Published November 09, 2010

A video that appears to show a missile launch off the coast of California is so far "unexplained" by anyone in the military, a Pentagon spokesman told reporters Tuesday morning

Col. Dave Lapan said he is not able to concur with an official from North American Aerospace Defense Command/U.S. Northern Command who told Fox News earlier that there was "no threat to the homeland."

Lapan said the military doesn't know exactly what the so-called mystery missile was so can't say it's harmless.

A local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles on Monday evening captured on video the image of the "spectacular" projectile flying about 35 miles out to sea, west of Los Angeles and north of Catalina Island.

The Missile Defense Agency told Fox News it did not launch any test missile Monday night that could explain the dramatic images. The Navy and the Air Force were also unable to offer an explanation.

Lapan said it does not appear that whatever was flying was part of a "regularly scheduled missile test." He noted that before a missile test, notifications are sent to mariners and airmen. This does not appear to be the case here.

At this point, the military is working only with video taken from the local news camera, and NORAD and Northcom apparently were not able to detect the contrail on their own.

It appears from the video, Lapan said, the object was launched from the water and not U.S. soil, though at this point there is no way to be certain.

If a test missile or an accidental missile was launched in the region it would have either come from Naval Air Station Point Mugu or Vandenberg Air Force Base. At sea it could have come from a U.S. submarine or a surface ship. But so far, it all remains a mystery.

sounds like my pals at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory screwed up their propulsion/rocket experiment and miscalculated the necessary rocket power to reach certain height...and went too far up that it caught the gov't attention. Ooops!

nothing to worry about in here. I recall a similar news like this while back by a surprised Navy test.

They haven't blamed them but you know their military is accident prone.

but.... right off the CA coast? that's an act of aggression.

Missile or rocket? It's been described as a ballistic missile, possible ICBM, but that's just a guess so far.

What is a "surprised" Navy test?

If the Navy tests something it's not a "surprise" but planned. That being said, most Navy testing is classified.

TV news just reported that the US Navy denies it belongs to them.

I probably think it would came from Vandenberg Air Force Base. They are well known for producing rockets.

Not if it's an accident.

You do know that foreign subs are off our coasts at all times?

Side note: Have you ever seen Failsafe? (Of course, that's fiction. :) )

Mystery missile launch caught on camera off southern California coast - NYPOST.com

The Pentagon said Tuesday that a missile launch off the southern coast of California remained “unexplained” and that its mysterious origins meant that it was not possible to rule out any threat to the homeland, Fox News Channel reported.

Earlier Tuesday, NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) and NORTHCOM (United States Northern Command) officials told Fox there was no threat, but Pentagon Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan would not confirm that because the military does not know what the missile was or where it came from.

Reba,

Honestly, I think it is no big deal. I definitely think it came from Vandenberg Air Force Base. It is not the first time the local news came out like this. It happens once or twice a year. I lived near the base, and we always see anything weird going on, and we know right away that it comes directly from the base. Maybe you could ask the company, Raytheon. Raythoen always work closely with Vandenberg base to make rockets and bombs for years.

were there eyewitnesses at the time the video was recorded?

I noticed there's aircraft near the missile.

I would think that the press and NORAD would have already checked with them. :dunno:

It was a news chopper that filmed it.

I noticed there's aircraft near the missile.
Yes, I saw that, too. Good thing the missile didn't hit it or anything else. That's a busy air space over southern California.

there have been a lot of mystery missiles from Vandenburgh over the years. One was a classified Apollo mission.
