Prune Belly Syndrome: Military family needs a kidney for their son - KSWB

SAN DIEGO -- The 16-month-old boy of a local military family may look healthy on the outside, but he is fighting for his life.

Liam Houck was born with prune belly syndrome, a condition which has caused both of his kidneys to fail. Houck has spent most of his life in and out of the hospital, and his mother said he needs a kidney to stay alive.

"His kidneys were about 30 percent functional when he was born and have steadily been going downhill since," said Vanessa Houck, his mother. "In November, he went on dialysis which has been very hard."

To help pay for medical bills, "Cup of Yo" in Point Loma is giving 20 percent of its proceeds to the Houck family during a two day period.

"The fact that it's Baby Liam and that he's in an unfortunate situation. It's the least we could really do," said Cup of Yo's owner Veronica Ecker. "It's amazing to see everyone who has come out and support him."

The Houck family has set up a website for anyone interested in donating to their son's cause.
