I suffer from terrible migraines.
These migraines forced me to go on disability pension. Not the hearing loss - migraines disabled me.

Anybody with this awful disease here? How do you manage with it?

Migraines...

Fuzzy... I will be as brief as possible. From Dr. Balch's book, it says that any number of things can trigger a migraine such as: allergies, constipation, stress, liver malfunction, too much or too little sleep, emotional changes, hormonal changes, sun glare, flashing lights, lack of exercise, and changes in barometric pressure. Dental problems may also be a factor. Low blood sugar is frequently associated with migraine; studies have shown that blood sugar levels are low during a migraine attack, and the lower the blood sugar level, the more severe the headache (becoming worse). Smoking can cause a migraine attack because the nicotine and carbon monoxide cigarette smoke contains does affect the blood vessels -- the nicotine constricts them while the carbon monoxide tends to expand them. Many different food may precipitate an attack. Some of the most common offenders are: chocolate, citrus fruits, alcohol (especially red wine), and any food that is aged, cured, pickled, soured, yeasty, or fermented. Also Dr. Balch suggested that migraine sufferers should omit or remove from their diet: foods that contain the amino acid tyramine , including aged meats, avocados, bananas, beer, cabbage, canned fish, dairy foods, eggplant, hard cheeses, potatoes, raspberries, red plums, tomatoes, wine, and yeast. Also avoid alcoholic beverages, aspirin, monosodium glutamate (MSG), nitrites (preservatives found in hot dogs and luncheon meats), salts and spicy foods. Eat small meals and nutritious snacks between meals if needed to help stabilize wide swings in blood sugar that may precipitate a migraine. Don't miss meals.
Fuzzy, this book has soooo much more including a list of nutrients. I don't have time now and have to leave, sorry, but if you can buy a copy of that book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Dr. James Balch at your local health food store, I encourage you to do so. I wish you a safe, speedy and complete recovery.

Thanks, Rick I apprecciate your trying to help,
I already know everything - and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING ! about migraines,
I've tried supplements and alternative medicine to no avail. I do watch my triggers and try never to be hungry.

A medicine from triptan group - Zomig works best for me.

Audiofuzzy,

You probably know more about the disease than I do. I don't suffer from migraines, but my sister does. So does my grandmother. I have no stories to share or advice to give. I just wanted to  and say, I know how rough it can be. I've seen how incapacitated they make my relatives.

And, you're right. Everybody has to find what works for them. Vitamins and supplements are great, but they aren't a cure. At least, imho.

Good luck to you!

I do have problem miragines.. There's no cure.. I was kind devestated and accept who am I being miragines everyday.. I felt funny thing I'm too addict taking medcation "Advil miragines". I don't feel like to take medcation everyday due my miragines senstive. I really want cure but nothing can do help. I've been searched website and to find proprite food health suitable for me but nothing works at all.. Due my gene coming from my birth mom who has miragines extactly alike me. *sigh*

I have to live w/it.

I suffer lots of time with tension headaches along with Migraine.. my primary doc agree with me to do cat scan when my neurogoloist refused... so We got mine done.. turn out everything's normal. he want to try procaz so I did.. WOW what a miracle I haven't had any headaches that constanly kills me.. so It's like 5 sec to 5 min i can live with that but 24 hours a day it's drain my pressure down !

There are things you could try that might help control your migraines, BullyMom. See a neurologist, and see if there's some med you could try. You could also look into relaxation techniques that might help. I believe in combining holistic approaches and traditional medicine. It never hurts to do research into things.

Give it a shot! Good luck!

You all are right in one aspect - true migraine is neurological disease with still unknown causes, and that's why there is no cure.
We know that it's mainly faulty genes, wrong shaped brain cells, neurons misfiring, and the pain itself is caused also by widening of the blood vessels in the brain.

Most people migraines respond to triptans (Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt etc) but some not,
for me for very severe M combination of a painkiller like naproxen or T3 taken together with Zomig work better than either one alone.
OTC (over-the counter) does nothing for my M.

I understand your concern about .. I felt funny thing I'm too addict taking medcation "Advil miragines".

You are NOT an addict, you are dependent on Advil to get rid of pain and help you function normally.
It's different from addiction,
it's more like as a diabetic is dependent on insuline, so are you on Advil to get rid of pain. If your head stop hurting you'll probably stop taking Advil just like that - snap!.

But taking painkillers everyday may lead to rebound headaches which are caused by the very meds we take for pain.
When Advil gets out of your body, the body respond by giving you pain. You take Advil for pain, after a while the body wants Advil again and starts giving you pain. You take another Advil... and the cycle begins.

But it's not always the case of rebound and it's best to see a dr to help you determine if you indeed suffer from rebound or daily chronic migraine (or daily headaches).

But it's important that you find a good neuro with whom you feel comfortable.I hate drs that make me feel like an idiot and an addict. I am not an addict - I am a person in pain.

If your head pain doesn't improve after two weeks of stopping Advil it is most likely not a rebound..

Try taking Magnesium 250 mg tablets at least once a day. Migraneurs are often low in Magnesium. Most people observe some improvement after taking Mag..
very very few get HA from it, I was helped with Magnesium and I always take it once a day. Sometimes with calcium.

I symphatize with all of you. Wish you painfree day.

Those pills are not really magic. It is a temporary relief. In fact, they are toxic to your body. Three common things that you should know:

(1) Ask your honest dentist to get rid of your mecurcy fillings, and replace them to pure plastic fillings. I have them since 5 years, and I don't have any problem with them. After that, I recommend you to take a foot bath treatment for removing toxic from your body due mercury leaks. For example - http://www.biocleanse.info/qa.html

(2) Go to a good chiropractor for your adjustment.

(3) See a specialist for analysis your body to see if you find something to make your health better. http://www.theqxci.com/qxci_practioners.html

If you don't follow them, then I don't know what to tell you because some people never listen... That's sad for them to suffer without knowledge for help. I'm here to tell you about them. I hope that you will do it. If you cannot afford to have a dentist..., then follow step number two & three above. Come on, and don't be chicken. You will thank me someday. :)

Thank you for your suggestions :)

Well I was having migraines well before my first dental fillings, so I doubt this is a cause.

But I am changing my fillings for the white ones altough not because of migraines or mercury.

As for "natural methods" - I and other migraneurs I know we 've tried so many and some helped some not. But basically there is nothing that will help to get rid of them, just make them more bearable.

I suffer 11 1/2 years too...
right after kayla was born.. that's when I start
to have them daily.. the doc put me on so
many different meds. some work for a while
then i get pregnant 2nd time .. meds stop but
1 of the med can be use very little not too much..
then after his birth. back to another meds..
then I got preg with 3rd.. Argh.. worst.. then finally
new meds.. not working. I gave up with my neuro,
asked my primary care doc (new doc almost 1 yr now)
he improvised my headaches **thank gawd**

I will do what he think its best.. I now don't get any
tingling, numbness anymore TOO!

that's MORE than just headaches, tensions etc..

I used to have severe migraines. I couldn't get out of bed. I felt like a stake was pounded into my head, and I was very nauseated feeling. I was very sensitive to noise and light during headaches. Sometimes I preferred to die than bear the pain. That continued from about age 20 to 40. Then the headaches just went away.

The doctors used to prescribe Caffergut (sp?), which was a concentrated caffeine pill, or Tylox (I think that was Tylenol mixed with codeine) but nothing worked. I usually just had to "sleep it off".

My dad and his mom also had migraines, so it might have been partly heriditary. All three of us were "high-strung" personalities.

The doctors tested me for all allergies but found none.

My theory, migraine triggers could be hormonal.

I haven't had any more migraines for over 10 years.

I suffer from severe migraines too..I started getting them when i was about 30 years old. I went to the doctor about it cuz i started throwing up, was sensitive to lights, noise etc., had brain scan to make sure there is no tumor, there wasnt. The doctor asked me if there was any family members who suffer from it, i told him that my grandmother and a sister had suffered from it, he said it is hereditary. I now take Inderal once a day, Topamax twice a day for migraine preventive..I take Imitrex if i have a migraine attack. Works very well for me. So it is a good idea to have your doctor to check you out for anything like food allergies, hormonal changes during your period, stress,
hereditary, even brain tumor, etc. like Rickcares says..you just have to work with your doctor to try out several kinds of medicines to try and see which works for you..I know one lady cant take Imitrex cuz of her heart murmer and other person says that it dont work for her, so gotta try other kinds of medicine to see what works best for you..i have tried other stuff and it didnt work for me..Imitrex works best for me. I hope you can find something that will work best for you, Audiofuzzy!! God bless you, i know how you feel cuz migraines are so horrible!.....

I am disappointed to read your articles about finding the right pill to see which works for you. I did not want to pick on you guys about a chiropractor. Have you thought about it? What is wrong with it? Are you afraid that he/she might break your neck?

I go and see my chiropractor for my neck and sore back if I pick up heavy boxes improperly. At first seeing my chiropractor, I was afraid to think about breaking my neck. I understand that it is a risk, but it is important for my health that comes first. Now, I rarely see my chiropractor because I feel good after my few appointments (since 4 months).

I don't blame you if you are worried if something happen to you. Would you rather to have an operation than seeing a chiropractor? I hope that you are not thinking about the operation because the doctor implants metal parts on the bone, and it is a permanent installation. My mother's friend from Boston suffer sore back for years, and he told me that he should have gone to see a chiropractor. It is too late for him because his metal implant still hurt his back. He has to take pills for the pains. Sorry off the subject, but anything that something bothers you, your chiropractor will 'heal' you. I hope that you understand it.

>>>My theory, migraine triggers could be hormonal.<<<

3 times more women that men suffer from migraines because of hormones.
Hormones are definitely a trigger.
My worst migraines are when I have ovulation- nothing works for them them.

Some women observe improvement during pregnancy - it's due to hormonal changes.

Caffergot is a mix of ergotamine and coffeine. have you ever tried Imitrex?

>> about a chiropractor<<

Many migraneurs known to me tried chiropractic medcinie but only a few received some relief. Most didn't see much of a difference.

If you think carefully that migraine origins are in the central nervous system you'll see that manipulating one's bones and whatnot will not have that much impact... because migraine origin is in the brain..

I wish there was something "natural" and easy that would work for my migranes. Unfortunately only these pills work for me.. I am not keen on taking them.. I just don't have a choice.

I do have a mirgaine once in a while like every few months before my monthly cycle occurs about anywhere from few hours to half day. For example, my friend has a worst mirgaine lasting for 5 days. :-/

Okay. What about the QXCI?

My sister's friend told her that she had migraines for a few years(?), and she went to see a QXCI practioner in her area. After 1st treatment, she felt better in one day. I find hard to believe it. I think you gotta try one in your area.

http://www.theqxci.com/qxci_practioners.html (There are many QXCI services, you need to use google to search in your area.)

I asked her if the QXCI ever hurt her, and she said not at all. All she had to sit in a chair with the treatment for three hours. Now, she is very happy that her migraine is gone. She does not need another treatment since last March. That's all I know of. It looks too tricky to me, and now I believe her 100 percent.

Imitrex wasn't available years ago when I had my headaches. I don't have migraines now. So I have never tried Imitrex.
