Metal Gear Solid & Halo Eyeing the Big Screen
Source: Variety, Daniel Alter November 28, 2004

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is finally thinking about bringing the popular game series to the big screen, reports Variety.

Hollywood studios have been looking to pick up film rights to the testosterone-filled espionage title for some time, says the trade. But Kojima, a movie buff and occasional film critic, has held off on selling film rights until now.

The sophisticated gameplay of the "Metal Game Solid" series has revolutionized the gaming world, and the third installment of the PS2 title offers new 3-D twists and extra components available online. The first two installments were gigantic sellers for Japan's Konami, moving 14.63 million units worldwide (6.64 million in the U.S.) in the past six years.

Meanwhile, a rumor hit the net recently that producers Ronald Shusett ("Alien" franchise) and Daniel Alter have approached Bungie about adapting the "Halo" games into a movie.

Alter confirmed this to ComingSoon.net, adding that they have indeed talked to director Ridley Scott about a possible film. Apparently Bungie will only license the rights if both Scott and Shusett are involved with the project.

Yeah there've been a flood of rumors about Scott's future plans for filming a Halo movie based on Xbox's killer FPS title and if that happens, of course, we are all in cloud 9.

I believe it would be a good idea if Bungie and Mircosoft give the rights to Scott and Shusett doing the work for the Halo film in the future since he's a gensis on such sci-fil films such as "alien", which is definetly one of my most favorite movies in history.

P.S. I always wonder who will play as Master Chief? though I never knew what he looks like under the helmet...lol

I'll like to see the game developers who were involved with both of these franchises deeply involved with the movies to make sure everything is faithful and true to the core of the games.

I heard these rumours too as well a while ago. Ridley Scott is a great director, but he've had hits and misses in the past, but still a solid director. For a movie like Metal Solid Gear, there's not a lot of movies like Metal Gear Solid which would make it incredibly difficult for the studios to do it right. Same goes for Halo, there's nothing like that, the closest a movie come to Halo is Starship Troopers. But I wouldn't want the director of that movie to direct Halo.

Well yeah...hopefully that would happen...though alot of videogames-based movies like Super Mario bros. , street fighter, and mortal kombat definetly sucked the ape's balls so bad it just whimpered for help.

The only videogame based movie that I thought was pretty good was the first "Resident Evil" movie with Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodeiz (sp?) though they didn't really include any characters from the games expect the "licker" with big claws and a really long tongue...that was pretty cool.

The sequel...aw somebody just shoot me please.

it was WAY downright awful.

are you talking about the same director who also filmed "robocop"? if so, the robocop triogly were a major embrassassment.

Hmmm I wouldn't mind Tom Cruise or Hugh Jacksman to play as Solid Snake if there was ever a possible metal gear solid movie lol

Yes, and the same one responsible for Total Recall which I did like.

Yes, I agree. The sequel was one of the worst sequels I've ever seen in my entire life. I meant, the motorcycle stunts... c'mon! That was so stupid. I cricked at these moments. Almost everything about that movie was pretty bad, and I don't think Toronto was a good city to pick to represent Racoon City. The shot of CN Tower totally ruined it. Everybody know that the CN Tower is from Toronto.

Don't even get me started on Super Mario Bros. The movie had potential, but they just ruined it big time.

As part of anime fansub group, I heard from this rumor that there will be anime serie for MGS. And now cinema, hmm.

Yeah I've heard there are afew anime series already planned out on MGS and even manga-style comics, as well.

which director would you like him to do a MGS film?

Francis Ford Coppola 1169 (2%)
Peter Jackson 3261 (8%)
Frank Darabont 128 (0%)
Steven Spielberg 4539 (11%)
Quentin Tarantino 9300 (23%)
Martin Scorsese 1012 (2%)
The Wachowskis 3573 (9%)
David Fincher 1788 (4%)
Hideo Kojima 13056 (33%)
Other 1718 (4%)

Personally, I would pick Hideo Kojima, since he is the creator behind the MGS series, after all...heck he's a genesis at creating games, so maybe he would be a genesis at creating movies, as well.

Ditto. I would prefer to have him as a director of MGS movie as well.

Edit: Wait a minute, what do you mean by that 'genesis' word? Does that mean 'genius'?
