Scottish singer Susan Boyle was taken to a London clinic for treatment following her second-place finish in a U.K. talent competition, local media reported Monday.

Boyle, 48, was admitted to the Priory Clinic on Sunday, a day after she finished behind a male dance group in the Britain's Got Talent television show, the Sun newspaper reported.

Boyle was the heavy favourite to win the finals, watched by over 19 million people, after becoming a YouTube sensation following her first appearance on the show in April.

By Friday, the pressure appeared to be building on the singer, who reportedly went into seclusion after exploding at journalists from Britain's notoriously aggressive tabloids.

The television company Talkback Thames said Boyle was "exhausted and emotionally drained," and was taking a few days off.

"She has been seen by her private GP who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery," the company said. "We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery."

London police would not directly confirm the report, but said doctors had been called to assist a woman under the Mental Health Act. Police said the woman had gone to a clinic voluntarily.

Boyle drew 20.2 per cent of the vote in the final, behind the dance group Diversity, which won 24.9 per cent of the four million votes cast.

The discovery that a 48-year-old woman from a small Scottish town was capable of singing very well on a national stage made Boyle an international sensation. Heavy media coverage followed, much of it laced with snide commentary about her looks, social awkwardness and remark that she had never been kissed.

Still, on Oprah Winfrey's U.S. television show, the singer said she was "loving every second" of her unexpected stardom.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond was scathing about the media pressure.

"We've got elements of a press who like nothing better than to build people up and then drag them down," Salmond said. "It's pretty sad actually. It's almost a psychosis."

Singer Susan Boyle in London clinic to recover from stress: reports

This is really sad. All the woman wanted to do was sing, and as usual, tabloids had to make use of her celebrity status and watch and question her every move. This is the reason why so many celebrities go nutty and resort to things such as drugs. I also do not like how this article refers to her sense of humour as "social awkwardness". Everyone is different.

That is sad. It was an inspiring story. Too bad it ended this way.

I completely agree. It was so great to see people finally not caring if someone was "beautiful" and actually listened and saw Susan as an awesome singer and person. But now it's turned to this. :( Tabloids ruin lives.

I agree. Susan had so much class and was humble about her talent. It's a shame she ended up breaking under the pressure. I wish her well in her recovery. She deserves it after the wonderful job she did.

I was pretty sure she was going to win! Even though I REALLY like Diversity!!! They're good... but with all the attention that was going on on Susan Boyle - plus I think she was the best out of all of them - I was sort of disappointed... *sigh*

Oh well...

It's not like I can change anything and it's not going to change myself anyway... ;)

but I feel sorry for Susan!

More news on Susan. She is apparently out of the hospital and now focusing on the future. Susan Boyle 'happier' as she is released from hospital

Susan Boyle has left a London clinic where she was being treated for exhaustion and is "much happier" now, her brother Gerry Boyle said Friday.

Boyle was admitted to the private clinic last Sunday after coming second in the Britain's Got Talent finale Saturday night.

She was said to have suffered an anxiety attack, shouting and throwing a glass of water at a staff member backstage after her loss. The dance act Diversity won the reality TV talent competition.

Boyle is now staying at a London flat and starting to make plans for the future, her brother said.

During the eight-week talent competition, Boyle went from a quiet life as a church volunteer in a small town to global fame after a video of her first performance garnered more than 220 million views on YouTube.

Gerry Boyle said his sister has been assured the second place finish in the contest is not the end of her singing career.

"Things are becoming clearer for her now. She's now beginning to believe that, 'Yes, indeed, I will be a singer,'" he said in TV interview.

There are unconfirmed reports that Britain's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has offered to help with her career.

She is also said to have received offers from the U.S., including an invitation to sing at Demi Moore's wedding anniversary.

she'll be advertising for..... happy drug!

This is wonderful news. If it's true, I'm glad Simon will be helping Susan obtain a music contract. She deserves it.

When my aunt had her car accident, she had a slight brain damaged. She was paralyze on her right side for about a year or so. it's really hard to handle stress and pressure with brain damage. I've seen my aunt go from easily going person to a very short tempered. She have changed after her accident.

You tend to get frustrated and overwhelmed and I think that's what happened to Susan.

I agree with your assertion. What happened to Susan is completely understandable. If I were in her position, I would have become psychotic due to the pressure.

Susan handled herself quite well throughout the competition and deserves kudos for that. :cool2:

You guys forgot something, she is 48. I see her face get red flash so I knew she is going thru big "c". It is normal for us women who are at the stage of life to go thru big change. Shame on Meida.

Susan Boyle, who captured the world's attention earlier this spring on the television show Britain's Got Talent, returned to the stage in Birmingham, England, on Friday for the first time since being treated for exhaustion in a London clinic.

Boyle appeared on the first night of a British tour featuring contestants from the reality television show.

The 48-year-old sang the two show tunes that she performed on Britain's Got Talent – I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables and Memory from Cats.

Boyle was introduced by Britain's Got More Talent presenter, Stephen Mulhern, who described her as being famous all over the world.

"She's so famous," he added, "even her pet cat Pebbles is famous."

BBC News reported that Boyle appeared subdued on stage but blew a kiss to her screaming fans. She received a standing ovation after her performance.

She will perform in the tour's two Saturday shows in Sheffield, but has said she will appear in only a handful of the 23 tour venues scheduled throughout Britain in order to conserve her voice for her debut album.

The tour ends on July 5 in Bournemouth.

During the eight-week Britain's Got Talent competition, the Scottish church volunteer shot to global fame after a video of her first audition garnered millions of views on YouTube.

On May 30, she finished second to Diversity, a street dance group from Essex. She suffered an anxiety attack backstage after her loss and was treated for five days in London's Priory Clinic.
