I have a Deaf friend who is training in Karate, but she is the only Deaf person I know practising a martial art. Just out of curiosity, are there any alldeaf forum members who practise a martial art? If so, I'd love to hear about your thoughts on it! Why do you do it and how do you train, etc.

I'm training in Shaolin Kung Fu (I started only two weeks ago), and along with my small experience in Pai Lum, I train to develop my mind and body. I do this for spiritual reasons, but also because Kung Fu is just awesome!

What are your thoughts?

Hey there, gecko.....

I am AD member with new hearing loss and I have taken classes here and there in various martial arts over the years but, due to cost, never continually studied any one, although I am very interested in them. I have taken Systema, sampled Krav, took Karate in high school, took Women's Self Defense and started learning Tai Chi some years back, which I still formally review once a week with someone and do practice routinely. I have LD so this kind of thing is more challenging for me. Have you seen that show where they have those two MMA guys going around the world learning about different martial arts? I like that program.
I would like to know more about Kung Fu - if I was going to take another class it is one of the areas I was especially interested in.

oh wait, am interested to know more about Pai Lum, never saw it -

im a blackbelt in Kickboxing but unfortunately only a greenbelt in taekwon do *whistles* Kickboxing gives you quite a workout and is very good offensivly but the problem is youll get tired after 4 minutes the goal isnt to fight the goal is to knock your opponent out as quick as possible and get away call police (not in tournements though lol) tae kwon do, I beleive is great for defense have you considered those?

My boys, ages 17, 14 and 12 take Tae Kwon Do. Purple, Green and Brown belts. They are strong and healthy! And I've learned some self-defense along with them also. All 3 of them have yet to get into a fist fight! I do not encourage fighting whatsoever, only in extreme cases where they would have to defend themselves to an aggressor who was determined to beat them up.

They know they are capable of hurting someone, badly. And oftentimes, they do their routines in the front yard before practice or tournaments and other kids watch as well. It's a big confidence boost, a feeling of well-being, healthy and strong.

agreed you dont use the techniques to activly go out and hurt someone, i only use it to defend my self , the easy one I think is to crush someones chest bone (the very last resort in a case of him or me other wise there are easier methods such as a roundhouse kick to the head that usually works for me

If that wasn't for Bruce Lee, there is no marial arts lesson here in America behind gay judo.

wha? bruce lee would crush the opponents chest with his feet, in kickboxing you do it with your hand alllthoughhhhhhhhhhhhh bruce lee was a kickboxer so Idunno I dont think im going to stomp on someones chest in a tourny but I might I challenge you!!!!!!! muwhahahahah

Bruce Lee was more or less a freestyler, he did wingchun, but didnt complete it. Then he went to america. he then went on and developed his own ways, Jeet kune do. im not sure, but i think he mixed in a lot of other ways, dunno about kickboxing though because back then in the 1960's/1970's was largely unknown unless you went to somewhere in the backskirts in Thailand.

thought it was taiwan? idk but your right he kindof just pulled all of it together and whooped alot of ass. hehehe go brucie

he sure did, he was one of the rarest type of person who is a natural, if he was still alive, phew shit man, he'd be the real deal GrandMaster. All the other jokers well they are good no doubt, but they wouldnt have this same 'greatness' no way, because of the martial arts clubs they own they have names. Bruce was himself, didnt need to say 'so and so taught me this, so now im a fighter, he just went and showed, the fighting did the talking, not the bullshit.

and thats why he will be remembered for a long time this is my opinion but there was no greater martial arts fighter (cept me muwhahahah jk) than bruce lee R.I.P your fellow martial artist salute you

I have a few deaf friends who trained in martial arts.

dogmom -

Pai Lum is White Dragon Kung Fu. It's based on a system made from merging many Crane and Dragon styles, along with many others - although I haven't progressed very far so I'm not a good source of info :D The website for the one I sporadically attend is Fire Dragon Australia - Dragon-style kung fu in Canberra and Queanbeyan There are also a few videos on YouTube about it, including Sifu Neil Hardy breaking a couple of world records.

T'ai C'hi is pretty good - eventually when I have enough money and time I also want to begin training in that. I'm starting some Chi gung in Shaolin Kung Fu, but it will take a while to get good at it :D

Kung Fu is sort of a catch-all phrase for many styles of Chinese martial arts. Originating mostly from Shaoling Kung Fu (I'm not sure exactly what 'style' or if it was just general), there are heaps of different styles of Kung Fu, made from different ideas and philosophies.

If you want to choose one, find a school with a good teacher who will also teach the philosophy behind it (because otherwise, it is like trying to build a house without a blueprint - you can make a shack or something, but nothing as strong and as sturdy as with a plan). Basically, do some research and ask some questions - many Kung Fu styles are able to suit body types (small and quick, and large and powerful) in such a way to maximise your own ability. Awesome :D

As for fitness with Kickboxing, Babyface - I am pretty unfit when it comes to extended cardiovascular stuff. If I was going to go quick but with endurance, I might go Muay Thai, but I'm probably too old now to get that expertise :D

Also, with rockin'mom's post, I agree with not looking for fights - the ironic (and in some flights of fantasy - annoying) thing about learning a powerful martial art is that you have to avoid fights. Most punks out there are just thugs or decent fist-fighters. If someone's trained well in a martial art, they could do way too much damage to a drunken sod :S

Still, I'm only at the stage where I'd make an interesting mop for a thug to clean up my own blood and teeth with :D

:ty:for info on kung fu, KF_Gecko! I will check out that site-

hmmm mop!!!!!!! lol jk our teacher is 63 years old youll be fine hehehehe in regards to age, but fitness hmm yeah my first day i was exhausted now im just used to it.

I watched a thing on NatGeo about which fighting style was the deadliest based upon how much damage a person could inflict with no weapons as well was which weapon was the deadliest.

At the end they decided that the Samurai was probably the deadliest. The Samurai had to be quick and flexible as well as strong and powerful. They also had the deadliest weapon - the Samaurai sword that could easily hack through a human in seconds.

What are your thoughts?

I've trained in Aikido for several years. Sensei Dave Rogers was my instructor and attained a 2nd kyu ranking. Aikido is a Japanese martial art and is quite the counter-intuitive MA compared to other kinds. Which is why it takes longer to train in Aikido in order to grasp the concept of Aikido. The Hut Aikido Club - Dave Rogers - Alamogordo, NM

Anyways, the thing to remember about martial arts is to choose an art that suits you and your philosophy. It's not about the best MA but what it is best for you.

Good luck and always keep an open mind when it comes to MA.
