Martha Stewart Takes Aim at 'Bad' Prison Food

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Martha Stewart (news - web sites) is keeping busy in prison "washing, scrubbing, sweeping, vacuuming, raking leaves" and more, as well as doing her best to avoid unappetizing jailhouse food, the homemaking entrepreneur told fans in a Christmas message on Wednesday.

"I have had time to think, time to write, time to exercise, time to not eat the bad food, and time to walk and contemplate the future," Stewart, who has now served more than two months of a five-month sentence in a West Virginia prison, wrote on her personal Web site, http://www.marthatalks.com

Stewart, founder of media and merchandising company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., said she has been put to work at the prison cleaning.

But she said she is looking forward to her release -- and her return to television.

Stewart's company recently announced a deal to bring her back to TV in fall 2005 in a daytime talk show produced by "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett.

Her message also contained a plea for people to think of the many women she has met in prison "who have been here for years -- devoid of care, devoid of love, devoid of family."

She urged people to support sentencing reforms for nonviolent first-time offenders and drug users who "would be much better served in a true rehabilitation center than in prison where there is no real help."

Stewart, who has taught millions of Americans how to bake tarts and organize their closets, went to prison in October after her March conviction on charges of lying to investigators about a personal stock sale.

She is expected to serve another five months in home confinement after her release.

Martha Stewart Living stock has risen sharply since she announced in September that she wanted to begin serving her prison term as soon as possible rather than wait for an appeal of her conviction to be heard. Shares were up 66 cents, or 2.4 percent, on Wednesday afternoon, at $27.90 on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).

and i say TOUGH!!!!!! she can be fed "bad food" *shrugs* her problem cuz she put herself there!

I don't think some of you people understand what happened. She was sent to jail over a small lie that she used as an answer to a question that she was asked, I don't think she committed a big terrible, terrible crime.

Yet, many filthy bastards who has committed far more crimes from huge corporations got away scot-free.

In fact, remember Enron?

What a disaster that one was, so many people got away with it scot-free and left so many investors empty-pocketed. In fact, Kenneth Lay has millions stashed away for his personal uses even if he serve a tough prison sentence, he's still filthy rich while he left many people with no money.

By the way, I have no doubt that Martha Stewart will be back on the top once she get out of prison. She is a very powerful woman, and still is even though she's in prison at the moment.

She is a billionaire, and she will be able to take the power back. Just wait and see.

That's right, Banjo.
What people are forgetting is that she WAS NOT CHARGED with anything.
It is frightening to see so much gleeful hatred towards her.
It is like, anyone can be grabbed, brought before a jury, and the jury says "We do not like you because you are richer than we are, so we will put you into prison."
That is EXACTLY what happened.

Not only because she's rich but because she is a woman. She was the first woman to break into the ranks of buyers on the Floor in the NY stock exchange. Her crime is "nothing" compared to what men do there everyday and have been doing for a hundred years.

Tousi, it's quite a sad world. Isn't it?

Kenneth Lay, may he burn in hell. Especially when we know he has millions stashed away for his personal uses. (grumbles)

Exactly. What Martha did was puny potatoes compared to what goes on in the business world every day. About 3 years ago, I was the primary whistleblower in a $50 million corporate bank fraud case involving some black drug dealers from Oakland who had a demonstrated connection to Death Row Records and possibly to Suge Knight himself. Trying to get the authorities involved was like pulling teeth. The FBI told me that they generally don’t investigate crimes involving that small an amount of money. They said it would have to be about a half billion or more before it was worth their attention. That was the last I talked to them—after that they never returned my phone calls. The DEA at least made a half-assed attempt to look into it, but gave up after a few weeks and dropped the whole thing as if it never happened. When me and another person who was involved in the whistleblowing made phone calls to them later to try to light a fire under their asses, they essentially told us to fuck off and mind our own business. The only agency that even showed any real interest in going after anybody was the IRS. They sent a couple of special investigators out to my house to talk to me, asked me some really dumb questions for an hour or so, and took off—promising me that I would be called to testify before a federal grand jury. That was the last I ever heard from them. Follow-up calls to their office went unanswered. Now, three years later, all three of the major players in the case are running around free as birdies, and pulling new scams on other people. Only one of them really took it in the pants—he lost a lot in the civil case. But the bank eventually dropped its lawsuit and just wrote off about $5 million in total losses. All of the perps will eventually bounce back and recover just fine, I’m sure. And the three of them put together have stolen at least a hundred times the amount of money that Martha made off the Imclone scam. Makes you proud to be an American.

Yeah, and I remember an interview on CNN saying that they need to make an example out of Martha Stewart for her wrongdoings.

I was like, huh? What about WorldCom, Enron, Andersen, Adelphia and many more firms?

I believe Martha Stewart will love Australian Prison food as it is 5 star foods here!!

Christmas Meal Menu I read in the newspaper recently they are having turkey, ham, roast vegetables and christmas pudding with ice-cream etc.

I don't think it's fair to have Martha serve that long of a term for "lying". She has money, she could pay it all back and serve community. No one died from her venture!
