Many deaf people turned down finding a job

Yes, it´s employer (supersivor) decision after exam your skills... But Kaista´s situation is different because she work for government for over 20 years which sound illogical to me.

I suggest her to talk with her employer (supersivor) first and then civilian personal officer. I would advise her to write a letter to them.

I am writing a letter to the EEOC Office of Federal Operations in Washington, DC. I realized the case with EEOC up to 180 days was insufficient for the Deaf people to do processing with an interpreter. The days need to be extand more days for the Deaf Federal employers.

Kaista, why don’t you ask your supervisor about the detail for 30-120 days for another position in your agency or another agency? It would build up your resume. Hopefully, you will have a good chance to get the promotion where you would have the recent detail.

That would be operations out of the sea Federal position. Southwest Asia to work with MiddleEast. I would be die by now.

No Thanks !

That's not what I meant.

You can ask your manager for details, or temporary positon, if the dept in your agency or another agency needs some assistance. That does not mean you can apply for the federal part time position. Just ask your co-workers who had expererinces about details for 30 to 190 days then applied for the promotion positions for same details.

That would be nice if you go to Southeast Asia. :D

If have hard time to find it then find new job at deaf school or private workplace for deaf people with reasonable wage, and can be higher than that.

My deaf friends (local and long distance) told me that they have hard time to find a job. I am not aware that most companies do not give a damn about deaf people, and even not hiring them. Most of them have a college degree. It seems that we are in back the old days of the deaf racism. I think that the ADA and some EECO are not successful.

Don't you think that more deaf people are getting layoff or not able to find a job nowadays?

I agreed !!

I haven't been "discriminated against" on my deafness thus far.

1) I know my rights. I am honest and up front with potential employers once I get an interview, and they have zero problems hiring me after the interview. I never mention my deafness on my application or resume.

2) I have not, to my knowledge, been placed in "deaf friendly" positions, in other words, jobs where I do not have to use the telephone or not interact with customers. All my jobs have been directly interfacing with customers or clients who do not sign, and I have earned many, many commendations on how I interact with those clients even in situations without interpreters and with interpreters.

2a) I've worked in theme parks, as a contractor for an IT company, an IT employee for two different colleges, and as a manager for a high technology company.

3) It's always about selling yourself into the job. It's about convincing the employer to want you for the position, not a hearing person. The only way to do that is to make them think you're the best.

I've done a bunch of job interviews with many deaf applicants. Many really don't present themselves well. They appear nervous, they seem desperate for the job, they act cold and unfriendly, they appear clueless about the job they are being interviewed for, they don't show that they're smart and educated. Why would I want to hire someone who doesn't show the talent and people skills I need?

There was a series of interviews I was giving for an IT position. I made sure the local deaf community knew about it. I got a ton of sloppy resumes, cover letters in ASL grammar, and several of these applicants claimed they had Masters degrees! It was appalling, and many of those got thrown out simply because it was obvious they didn't want to take the time to impress me.

Then came the interviews. Luckily, since I sign, I didn't have to worry about accessibility, nor did I have to deal with the stigma of "won't hire me because I'm deaf." Several people I interviewed gave made up answers, argued with me during the interview that the questions were too tough, and even came into the interview with an attitude instead of being friendly and polite. They didn't SELL me on their ability to do the job. I had no choice but to pick from the candidates that were not as qualified on paper but, dang, they made me feel they could do the job.

I've always struggled financially and been going after my college degree since 1982. I see the end to the undergrad work in 1 1/2 years, then law school. I've had piddle pay in jobs. I did one job interview to be a nursing assistant without wearing my hearing aids and got caught by the interviewer.

But, what you have said, especially the part where the deaf person doesn't know a thing about your company, in addition to arguing that the questions are too hard, while they sit there with a Masters degree, just blows me away! I'm hoh, severe hearing loss, treated every employer and employer to be with the utmost respect, always smiling, always putting my best foot forward. Never remaining seated when the interviewer walks into the room and ALWAYS going to them to shake hands first (my hand always in position first, too).

So, what seems to be the problem with deaf people? I'm going to law school after graduating, but I am not willing to fight for a deaf person who doesn't get a job, but yet has a high college/university degree and they act like idiots to an employer.

Dennis, I'd hire those with the less qualifications, too, if I had been you. Deaf don't deserve it if they act like that. I'd even end the interview after being told the question is too tough.

In my life, I always ignore when someone hire me because I wasn't enough until I am. So, I have great job that pay well.

I have weak point but I manage to go thru and re-learn .

I never think of them being discriminated on me. Maybe I don't know. But, I always ignore and move on to find job. So, I did.

Just imagine! I had AAS degree and get paid well.

That's good you got an AAS degree. I read that some companies prefer to hire some employees who received AAS and Diploma to work for them. It's also cheaper for them to hire low level employees. I am confused what you mean that you ignore when someone hire you. It does not make a sense.

What do you mean that they act idiot to an employer?

Oh, I understand it now. I feel the same way. It's really too bad that we have so many people in our country that need a job badly. It's their fault for breeding more babies that create many problems.

I am considering that some people are tried to be write with a ton of notes, Because a Hearing friend told me that she felt lazy to write too much paper Soooo..... Probably that Some people knew about this and not want hiring :dunno2:

Oh yes, you are right.

A deaf employee forgot to bring her note and a pen. She came to get me in other department to help her with our boss. I was disappointed that our boss did not bring his paper. I really like my boss because he is friendly, but I walked all the way to see him from another building at the Navy. My co-workers waited for me to get out to do our project. Actually, I really enjoyed chatting with the deaf woman. She was a Gallaudet student, and I was a NTID student. She lives far in West, and I live in East. I lost her address. That's too bad.

I went to college and graduted. I was professional banker. I was doing the accounting. I worked at the bank. Our boss had to tranfered so suddenly that our high level boss wanted change her position. We got new manager that she didn't like me. I appiled many job as accouting. They keep tell me that I am over quality and cannot do that with phone or commucation with customer. I told them that I can do accounting without phone. I can read and write well. They said no, they reguire phone and commucation. I searched for job in one year that I was stuck at nasty bank. It was so hard. I didnt make ugly myself or dirty etc. I wrote application very clear and my resume was so professional. No job want hire me.

One company one lady called me and had job interview. She said I am the best ever she meet. She really want hire me but she had to ask her boss to get approve. I waited for few day. She called me back, she said she cannot hire me. I was so upset. Strange, One deaf lady came to me and she wanted to talk to me. I knew her but I didnt realize that she is this lady's sister. She told me that her sister wanted hire me so bad and her boss didnt allowed her because of my deaf. She got so angry and quit after that. Wow I cannot believe that she quit for this.

Okay guys, listen up with your spiritual ears!!!

(I almost died 15-25 times from the Drug Biaxin, and I wrote a fairytale while under the influence of LSD - just 1 of the poisons that affected me).

I got advice from friends, am recovering from pneumonia, with the Lung Flush, Lugol's iodine, Benefecial Bacteria, and Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C every 3 hours, seaweed snacks, organic foods, kimchi, Cod Liver Oil, and Unsalted Butter swished through my mouth and swallowed a few times a day, Vitamin A, the Neti Pot, etc........

My message is this: (I'am also hard of hearing/almost deaf, and WAS discriminated against ALL THE TIME, even by the Ontario March of Dimes Job Helping Club)!

Tell them, that even though you don't have a PhD, and don't really know anything, I'am just a Creator of God, and just 1 of the many caretakers of Planet Earth, and even though God can't talk, TOGETHER people ARE the voice of God, so WAKE-UP!

And I'am also filing a Class Action Lawsuit against Abbott Drugs for making Biaxin, causing needless deaths for their greedy little hands to make a profit, and Health Canada doesn't give us the freedom of choice to make our own informed decisions regarding our health, and we eat all that low-fat, processed, non-local, GM foods in our Food Stores, so it's up to US, to change the people to change the laws!

And if lawyers and corporate workers say you can't, repeat what I've told you above!

I can't believe that you told the lady to call your boss. That was a mistake. Oh, well. Just don't make another mistake next time. Wish you a good luck!

No, I didn't tell a lady to call my nasty boss. I didnt put my nasty manager's name on my resume. I put my old boss's name on my resume. This job didnt give me the application because a lady asked for resume. I send my resume to her then she called and a appt with job interview. clear?

Stop right here!!!!!!! That is Discrimination right there as they stated that "can't hire you because of your DEAF" That's plain wrong for them to say that!!!!! You should go to your deaf service and explain about your situation and file complaint against this bank that you work for and maybe you might sue your bank for discrimination and they are breaking ADA laws right there!!!!!!! Geez!!!!!!!
