Man Fatally Shoots Self While Teaching Girlfriend Lesson on Gun Safety

By Chad Garrison in Press Release of the Day
Stupid Crimes & Misdemeanors

Given the name or the victim and the stupidity of the following incident, you'd almost think this story was made up.

Then again, it did occur in Jefferson County, Missouri.

Today Jeff-Co Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer reports that 40-year-old James Looney accidentally shot himself to death last Friday, September 18, while teaching his girlfriend a lesson on firearm safety.

The incident occurred in a residence in Imperial -- about 20 miles south of St. Louis. According to witnesses, Looney's teaching method involved him placing the gun to his head and asking his girlfriend if the gun would go off.

Looney apparently did this with two other firearms and varied safety mechanisms, before the last one actually fired into his head. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning.

And the kicker? Witnesses say Looney was going to take his girlfriend to the shooting range the next day, but insisted on firearm safety the day prior.

Boy, another Darwin Award!

Oh... notice his last name? Yep! LOONEY!

I never put my gun to my head even if my gun has no magazine or ammo. shit can happen that I overlooked a round in chamber.

That's sad, although I laughed involuntarily. That happened to some actor years ago, but it was a blank bullet, but still enough to kill him.

He obviously didn't follow the most basic safety rules himself.

Also, what's wrong with those witnesses? Why didn't they tell him to knock it off before it went too far?

Do you mean Jon-Erik Hexum? I remember that. He was so young, just starting a promising career. What a waste.

Why would a teaching method involve the gun being held on the head? I mean, common sense would have told you that no matter how secure the gun is, something is bound to happen whether you realize it or not.

It's like asking to play Russian Roulette.

Yes that's the one, I didn't remember the details.

Yep, I agree, another Darwin Award nominee !!! Can't help but feel bad for the guy, tho.

Evidently not. Who in their right mind would point a gun at their own head? That's really stupid. Oh yeah, they should have told him not to ever do this.

Can not truly blame them. They are supposedly ignorant to this. This is why the guy was supposed to teach them.

Ended up being tragic, by him using the method he used. I am sure the witnesses got a lesson for life, about gun safety.

Never ever point a gun to a person or to yourself. During a lesson.

I used the gun and fired once when i was a kid. My old next door was a former military. He showed me how to handle with the gun. He even said, " rule number one, is that keep point the gun away from you and anyone." I agree!

That is how I was taught as well. :)

I find it hard to believe that any sober adult would think that it's safe to point a gun at someone's head, and require "teaching" to know that.

Well, at least no one else was harmed (physically).

Yep. Learned that too as a kid when I was taught how to use a handgun, a rifle and a shotgun with my grand-dad.

You would be a bloody idiot to point it toward yourself, even when empty.

They went to him for lessons. They thought he knew what he was doing. They..... JUST LIKE HIM..... Thought the gun was not loaded. ( because he said so) or it was safe.... (because he said so) He was the teacher. They were the students... taking lessons from him. Like I said.... You can not blame them. They were ignorant to this. Sad to say... So was the Teacher...

I am sure they got a lesson of a lifetime. I am sure they have learned a lot from this. Along with being traumatized.

So I would not sit back and blame them too much...
