Attack Occurred 11 Days Ago

Parma, Ohio An 82-year-old man attacked by a pit bull and two other dogs in the Cleveland area has died of his injuries.

Authorities say Ernie Assad of Parma died at Parma Community Hospital Sunday, 11 days after the attack.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Police say the victim was working in his backyard when he was attacked by a pit bull, an American bulldog and a Cane Corso, a guard-dog breed known for being aloof with strangers.

The dogs got out of a yard down the street.

No charges have been filed.

One of the dog's owners is engaged to the daughter of an elected Parma official. The case will go to the Berea prosecutor to avoid a conflict of interest.

April 20, 2005: 2 Dogs That Mauled Man Owned By Former Browns Player

PARMA, Ohio -- An 82-year-old Parma man was hospitalized after being attacked by three dogs outside his home, and the animals' owner could face charges. NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis reported that the man was watering the flowers near his house Tuesday when he was suddenly knocked over and mauled.

Animal Control Officer Julie Kocik said the man was attacked by a Cane Corso, an American bulldog and a pit bull. Combined, the three dogs weighed nearly 300 pounds.

Somehow, all three dogs were able to get through a gated fence before the attack.

Kocik was called to the scene after the attack.

"I have seen everything, but I have never seen something like this," said Kocik.

Tabatha Kennedy, who lives next door and whose 16-year-old daughter witnessed the attack, believes that the dogs should not be returned to their owners.

However, the Cane Corso is already back with its owner. The American bulldog and a pit bull are owned by former Browns player and current Bears player Darnell Sanders.

He had taken to the dogs to his friend's house in Parma. That's where they got loose.

Kocik said dogs on the loose are a growing problem. She said that 31 dogs have been rounded up already this month.

Violators could be given fines totaling more than $100.

The victim may have to stay at the Cleveland Clinic for another week.

"I did see the victim in the hospital and hopefully I'll never see that again," Kocik said.

The owner of the dogs could face criminal charges. Animal Control is deciding whether the dogs should be permanently taken away from their owner.

:eek2: ...

Pet owners are responsible watching their own pet(s), At all times they need to watch their pets when they are outside in the yard. Accidents happen all the time and it's serious and they can be charge with a crime.

Sad about the 82 yrs old man, doesn't know what had hit him, and sorry that he had to died in that result, of the pet owner's neglected. :(

I agree with you. I have known many Pitbulls. Some are very sweet & friendly. Even nice for children to play with.
The dogs I have met that were nasty. It was the Stupid Owners that trained them that way. Some owners are just ignorant.
I know a Pitbull named Scooter. He is the sweetest dog I have ever met...

Which part did you disagree with?...I'm lost..

that is right!!! i have a pitbull mix.. she is a DOLL and VERY LOVABLE/AFFECTIONATE!!! and ALWAYS DRAWS ATTENTION IN PUBLIC! :greddy: cuz she thinks she is a human!

so it is the OWNERS WHO TRAIN them cuz pitbulls are sweet dogs like mine...

a friend's aunt's best friend brought her pitbull (beautiful 3 year old brown shaded color) over on easter sunday to play with their other dogs... she was SO SWEET and kept "DROOLING" at the sliding door so, i asked why the hell she was drooling.. her master said cuz it was her way of "crying" cuz she wanted to come in the house! sheesh!!!

i am sad to see these dogs are owned by the wrong owners.. i feel that if they were trained well and well-loved.. this wouldn't have happened to this poor man.. (sigh)

I disagree with the fact a great breed of dog gets owned by idiots... Stupidity should be painful IMHO

Yeah I understand, I don't think anyone knew this owner would raise their dog umm... in a way where they are more likely would attack another stranger, I think those types of dogs should be placed in a home where an owner would be more likly to treat them like they would treat their other pets, not like a quard dog or trained them by attacking others....otherwise when a dog runs away or get loosed , that when another innocent person get harmed or even killed...sadly it happened to this man, and for what I heard, they haven't done anything by charging those owners, or had removed the dogs from their homes yet.... ...I'm not quite sure what they're waiting for...

I'm keeping an eye on the news to find out more about this story and what they're going to do....

Why do they need guard dogs? Can't they just use alarm systems? :( The alarm systems only needs electricity and repairs and can't run away and attack people.

Yeah I have heard about this in ICCF bulletin board. Many of the corso breeders weren't happy to find out about this. I'm sad about this terrible news.

It happens, again by an ingorant owner who was stupid to let the dogs out! If they didn't let the dogs out, this will have been preventable. There was a story about a pomerianian, a small fuffy dog one of the members has a picture of it in here, mauled a baby in los angelos, Ca.

I agree it the owners that need to have knowledge on training those kind of dogs. I think they should have force owners to get special license for those who want pitbull or any breed that is very dangerous and need lot of trainings. I think they should do include those dangerous dogs (only popular listed dangerous dogs) into this wild animal law, THIS is what i found for Texas but YOU need to look up under your own states (for those living in usa).

http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/stustx822_101.htm

this is kind of example they should do with those kind of pets however it could reduce injuries and reducing population of pets *that I would not like but if it necessary I would go for it*

It not the dogs fault that they got mean, it is nature way of dog behaving just like other animal such as wild animals (lion, tiger, etc). You cant blame the dogs for acting this way or hurting others.

Were the pitbulls espaced from the zoo? its dangerous animal of the all... why people train their dogs for their own defense? it will be wasted if they kept buying another pitbulls when they put these pitbulls sleep. i hated people training the dogs to be mean for their defense like their own dogs is a hero for their own safety.

I didnt say anything about escaping zoo or anything. I am talking about special needs to know how to train dogs without have regrets in future that the dog could have done something bad if you hasnt train the dog in first place.

Main thing is that Owner need to KNOW the safety FIRST before own the dangerous pet and be sure they have good secure place for the pet to hang out such as backyard with GOOD stable fence (wood fence would be best suggestion). Like for example in Texas THEY Do allow people to own tiger as pet but they need to know how to take care of tigers first before do it and have to be in country area not in the city zone ofc...

"Main thing is that Owner need to KNOW the safety FIRST before own the dangerous pet and be sure they have good secure place for the pet to hang out such as backyard with GOOD stable fence (wood fence would be best suggestion)."

Please be specific what do you mean by dangerous pet? Tigers, Lions, and exotic animals are not considered a pet. They should have been left in the wild, people are being ignorant to take their natural enivorment away from them. Some idiots are breeding wolves to dogs and thought they are doing the right thing to improve the health problem. This idea of trying to mix two different species are not going to help with the health problem like hip dyplasia, PRA(progressive retinal antropy), heart murmurs, etc. The only way to prevent this is test both parents before they made the decision to breed both parents.

Getting a license to own "dangerous" dogs is ridculous, my opinion. I'm not saying that you are wrong for throwing this idea. I don't think this will resolve the whole problem in dog aggression. People are not going to change their attidue to be a "good responsible owner." The only way to change this is to educate the public about dogs and how to train them. Explain little about how do dogs see their owners as and remind the public that they(dogs) see one person or dog as a pack leader. Dogs are born to be in the "pack." Dogs have their own rules. Only the alpha dog will be allowed to sleep on a "higher" ground. The dogs who are below the alpha will be sleeping on the lower ground. Also, the alpha will eat first, the second below will be the next one to eat, the next third will eat, til the very last one way down the bottom will eat, etc.. Dogs do not have a "demoracy thought like we do." They do not think like us and they have their own way of view things differently than we do. (this applies to ALL DOGS! Even a chihuahua, a boxer, a poodle, a pitbull, a mutt, etc)

A good example here, when a person sees a dog trying to hump on someone's leg, people will say "this dog is horny or want to have sex, etc.." The dog who humped on a person's leg was not horny, the dog was trying to tell the person that he is controling the person. He is the "top" dog, and he is the boss not the person. It is a dangerous thing to let a dog to be in the control all the time, this dog will bite someone careless. Why did I say that this behavior is dangerous? Only alpha dog will hump on dogs who are below him or her. If the below dog refused to accept the humping from an alpha, there will be a fight waiting to happen. Not just humping, if an alpha puts her or his head above the dog's back, this is the "alpha" behavior. Usually trainers called this alpha behavior a "Domaniant aggression

People need to learn how to train dogs in a proper way, and always socialize with vaiorus people and dogs everyday! Also attend an obeidence school, level 1 and 2. This will have prevented many future problem.

If people own a golden retirever, should they required a license for people to own one. To be honest, if pitbulls and other domiant breeds are banned, this will not stop the criminals from getting a dog. I promise that criminals will go after dogs that aren't bannned yet. They will do anything to put their dirty hands on and destory the breed like they have done to pitbulls. Many people are afraid of pitbulls, rottweiler, dobermans, and german shepherds because of misleading from the media. It goes like

" Pitbull -- the bad
Golden-- the good"

Black- the bad
White-- the good

It goes all over again and again.. Only smart people will listen, learn, ask question, research, attend one of the obeidence classes, involved in a rescue org/ an active member at humane society, and read careful. The link I have posted in another thread..
http://www.leerburg.com/

The website above here I just posted. This site is good for anyone who does not understand a thing about "aggression" in dogs.
From the leerburg's link

Does anyone like to watch 20/20? Here are the facts from 20/20
(http://www.leerburg.com/aggresiv.htm)
"Here are just a few of the facts that were explained by 20-20:

90% of dog bites happen to people who know the dogs
Most of the dogs that bite are the family pets
60% to 70% of dog bites are to children or the elderly
40% of the bites to children result in loss of facial tissue (lips, cheek etc.)
1/2 of the claims made on homeowners insurance are dog bites claims
Over aggressiveness in dogs has a number of different causes that all can be traced back to
2 different areas: poor breeding or poor socializing. "
